However, the 50Shades version of weak/innocent/meek/needy will do anything for love with a "hottie" she "doesn't deserve" + cold and calculated assjack is pretty much the opposite of sexy. It's creepy... and repugnant.

The Story of O, on the other hand... also a tale of a female bottom... is dynamic and deeply self evaluating IMO.

I've played both parts... and both can be played with heat, feeling, and love and without all that other twaddle.
Yeah, that's what I said. Only, um, better.

I'm only finishing it because I refuse to be defeated by it. I leave that glory to War and Peace (for now), and Conan the Barbarian (possibly forever- oh the chauvanism!)

Hmm... Twilight (just the first book) defeated me... twice!
Then the second movie was on cable and my dear son put it on while I was home... because he had a girl around. Bleh.
And later he asked me how I felt about it. My response, I'll never get that time back... staring at a blank wall would have been better.

Did you read Anna Karenina? I was less intimidated by that than War and Peace, but still slightly intimidated it's a generous volume with a reputation of it's own. I read it a few Christmas holidays ago and enjoyed it thoroughly! It was wonderful. War and Peace is still on my list....
I'm working my way through Proust... thus the title of my own Journal. It will NOT defeat me! All 1.5 million or so words will be digested eventually.

Never tried Conan... fell in love with Drizzt Do'Urden as a young lass... still love him.

Don't bother with Conan. Fantasy pre-feminism. *shudder* (Not that I don't like big, hulking barbarian youths, but I have a problem with EVERY queen and lady and busty shepardess throwing themselves at him)

I have been introduced to Drizzt. Hmm, I should look him up again.

I haven't read Anna Karenina. I saw the movie ages ago. The Russian stuff is on my "If I can have a year in which to be a scholarly hermit" list. So, someday? Maybe? If I manage to get this seasonal thing rolling, I can spend my winters curled up with a good book like you're supposed to.

I recently embarked on a lark of re-reading the ENTIRE Drizzt series ... all 22 volumes! LOL
I think I'm on 12 now... only 10more to go!
I also read other stuff on the side... Deepak Chopra's The Budda atm, on a whim.

They are easy fare though... a bit of candy fluff even, if of a rather antiquated flavor in my mind. You know... a favorite childhood sweet that I might hate if I was introduced to it now...
Drizzt throws in a bit of "philosophy" at the beginning of each chapter. Being that he's a 'ranger' it's earthy and rather stoic, I wonder if that is what ultimately led me towards the Eastern and such philosophies as an adult.
    Books are a wonderful thing.

I can't see the movies, but I heartily approve of the whipped cream and other delights

Do you need a back/boob rub? I'm just here to serve.
