You swear on the bible in court? I would have a problem with that, really. In Belgium you just swear to tell the truth, but not on the bible.

To be honest, I'd have issues swearing on any holy book. I'm not religious by any stretch of the imagination, so 1) my swearing on a holy book does both it and me disrespect, 2) theoretically, that swear could mean nothing to me as I don't believe in the religion of that text, rendering the whole point beyond moot and the legal equivalent of sacrilegious, and 3) the idea that you won't take my word as the binding clause that it is in such a case is more than a little unnerving.

It's dumb... Everyone screams all the time about the division of church and government but yet we still swear on the bible when testifying... I guess it was relavent back in the day when a larger majority of people were scared of God, but for those of us who question the validity of such a being, swearing on the bible is dumb. simply put, being afraid of the law and what happens when you lie in court is enough for me to keep it straight... you don't have to involve a deity that I don't necessarily believe exists... it's much like having me swear on the life of your imaginary friend that I won't lie... pointless.
