Yeah, I used to watch certain soap operas as research. (Well, Mom had then on and there's only one tv in the house.) I needed research on how to reuse storyline with no one noticing or caring.

So I just read a description of 50 Shades of Grey... 'Soccer Mom porn and Jr High relationships, that’s a bad combo'
from all I have heard, that sounds about right.

Question...
WHYYYYYY do so many women self-identify with vapid, weak, awful female characters (aka Bella/Ana?)
Seriously.
I just want to punch them in the throat, not read about them and be all "Ohh yeah". WTH?![]()

I don't know, but it can't say much about our society when she's a moron and he's abusive. One of my friends and I were joking about writing a movie based on my experiance with polyamory. Well, I'm beginning to think that if, instead of someone like me and someone like him, I just insert Ana/Bella and Christian/Edward and I'll have a hit. Do you think I can write off the bucket I'll have to keep beside my desk for when I can't keep the bile down?

I've never read Fifty Shades of (Sign-On-The-Dotted-Line-First) Somewhat Icky Sexy Time, so I can only speak about Twilight. While Mr. Magazine Time stalked around the cubicles one day, a friendly work acquaintance we shall call Shake It recommended the series to me. I've wondered for years why she liked this series, and I conclude it had nothing to do with Bella.
Bella's a whining, sniveling, useless little placeholder of a character. She has no hobbies or interests or passions or dreams; she only exists in relationship to Edward. Shake It was nothing like that, a married woman in her forties with four or five kids who had a sort-of-boring job and twenty pounds she couldn't lose and a smoking habit she couldn't break and a fantastic sense of humor about everything. She wasn't reading the books for their great literary value (which wasn't something that was important to her anyway) or because she just-had-to-know what that wacky Bella might do next (cry/cry/whine/cry/whine). She was reading for the escape, that some dangerous pair of fellows might fall desperately in love with her for no reason at all, and want to whisk her away to live a life of excitement.
It wasn't Bella, not one bit. She was just the vacuum that Shake It could step inside.

I've tried to write bodice rippers and vapid Twilightness. I can't. I physically can't. I use words more than two syllables long. Hell, I know what a syllable is. I've had good sex. I am strong woman. AFter knowing all these things, I can't go back and unknow them to write a book.
