You want a variety ending in "-ate." What you're going to see most is magnesium oxide. Keep looking until you find something that's not that. Check the ingredients, because some will be a mixture of oxide and some other variety. I use magnesium malate, but it was a chore to find.

I use Now Foods magnesium citrate powder. No extra ingredients and it's pretty cheap (~$6 for 8 ounces) NOW Foods - Magnesium Citrate - 8 oz

I started by taking 0.5 tsp as anything above that seemed to cause diarrhea. But lately I've been taking a full teaspoon with no ill effect. Others on the forum have pointed out the importance of using super-hot (basically boiling) water to make sure it fizzes when you mix it. Not sure why that's so important. Also, I always have a gritty percipitate that forms and I don't know what it is.

Other use Natural Calm. It's more expensive, but supposedly works really well.

Just avoid magnesium oxide. It's absorbed very poorly.

I have a Jamieson bottle of capsules that just says "Magnesium," no -ate or -ide. Is this good or bad?

I didn't know it came in a powdered form and without fillers; thanks for mentioning this. I have the pills, but have to chew them up (yeah, yuck) because swallowing is hard for me. I may need to start shopping online or at least find a bigger health food store to stop at. The one I go to now has such a small selection.

I sleep like a friggin boulder thanks to it, and it helps curb my chocolate cravings

Yep, that's the one. Why is the -ate preferable to -ide?

Have you tried using mag oil instead? That way you can bypass the bowels issue all together. I do a mix of mag oil and natural calm because of the same issue. I apply a mag chloride oil in the a.m. and do a small does of natural calm in the evening.
