Unhappy First time poster: Cholesterol issues

I started following the Primal approach at the beginning of 2011. I have been very satisfied with my weight loss (30lbs) , I am the lightest I have been in about 15 years. And without much loss in muscle weight. My vitals have gotten much better. THe only thing I am concerned with is my cholesterol especially LDL's. I have been on cholesterol meds for probably 10 years now and was hoping once and for all that I could get off them. I exercise about 1 hr/day 2 days per week. This has been a blow because every other part of my health has been falling into place.

    Any thought/suggestions?

    Thanks,

Have you read Griffs posting on the whole cholesterol topic? If not, find it and read it. It might just shed some light on your situation.

    Welcome to the forum.

The lipid hypothesis is bunk. Most heart attack victims have "normal" total lipoprotein levels. High LDL is no cause for worry. If your trigs are low, you LDL is likely the light, fluffy type (larger particle size) which is benign. Educate your doctor and ditch the statins.

Blood cholesterol levels are not only a very, very poor predictor of heart attack risk, they are now widely understood by researchers to be a symptom and not a cause of health issues. Cholesterol is a repair molecule manufactured by the liver. If you ate no cholesterol, your blood levels would only go down by a few % points (and your risk of heart disease would not change).
My own case: 16 months of primal eating, unlimited meats, cream, cheese, and eggs - my LDL went up a little less than 10% and my hdl went up by over 30%. my trigs and fasting glucose came down into "ideal" range. My cardiologist rescinded his recommendation of Lipitor (which I never took) and changed his recommendation to, "keep doing whatever it is you are doing". THat's a fairly typical story.
    Have you had an MI?

The aforementioned cholesterol primer is available in my .sig.
Primal eating in a nutshell: If you are hungry, eat Primal food until you are satisfied (not stuffed). Then stop. Wait until you're hungry again. Repeat.

Thanks, Griff. My cholestrol ratios are stellar even though the Total Chol is high according to my Dr. I might send him your post and ask him to comment.

Thanks tfarny, Not sure what an MI is. Just had a physical with Lipid panels. According to Griff's post my ratio's are great. So I not overly concerned anymore.

MI = myocardial infarction. Statins have only been shown to be life-lengthening for males with a previous heart attack history. For the rest of the population, they have never shown any benefit - slightly lowered heart attack rates, slightly higher stroke / cancer rates. If you dr. doesn't know that, get a new one.
