    Question Food Processor Reviews

    Primal Fuel
    Howdy again :-) I am trying to get some opinions of those who have used food processors...as I'm contemplating about removing the coffee pot off my counter which I don't use and of course now a primal - I don't need the toaster either...

    What kind do you have? Why did you purchase? Does it live to your expectations why/why not? Would you purchase the same kind? and/or what would you change about it if you could? Thanks

    I don't have a food processor, but do have a suggestion. For any major purchase (defined in my case as anything costing more than $20), I check amazon.com and read the customer reviews there. You get a good cross section of comments and evaluations on all of the products available; basically, they answer all of the questions you pose in your second paragraph. I have also found great suggestions from commenters regarding use of the products.

    One caution though: amazon doesn't always have the best prices. Once you decide on a particular item, search the web for it. Good chance it will be available elsewhere for less.

    I have had the same Kitchenaid food processor for a very long time (15 years+) and I use it a lot. I bought it because it was a bit cheaper than the Cuisinart. I have been very happy with it.

    My food processor is about the least used item in my kitchen. I use it to make salmon or smoked mackerel pates and mousses - and that is about all! And I am an enthusiastic and adventurous cook. I use a grater for grating, a mandolin for slicing, a small electric mill thing for spices and herbs.

    But if you are going to buy one the one real bit of advice I would give is to check that the gap between slicing / grating blades and the lid is very small. If there is a big gap - and there is on a lot of processors - then great lumps of whatever you are grating go through ungrated.

    I use a food processor a lot and have gone through several. The first one I inherited from my Mom, but since have had a Hamilton Beach Big Mouth, which was nice, but the housing that held the lid down broke and it was too much trouble to find a replacement, so I went to WalMart and bought another one. It was a big name brand, just can't remember it right now. Problem was the motor was just not powerful enough--which I have since found is typical for WalMart. The same models will have a smaller motor than if you buy somewhere else which is how they price them so much lower.

    Recently, I purchased a KitchenAid Architect food processor on EBay, and it was around $150 dollars--probably would be close $225 retail. What a fantastic food processor! It is very heavy and very quiet. I mean REALLY quiet and does a perfect job. A chef friend of ours was over one day when i was making butter and was drooling over it.

    You really do get what you pay for when it comes to food processors.

    I have a Cuisinart 11 cup Classic which is a real workhorse. Kitchen Aid also makes great food processors - I used them several times and found them to be solid tools.
    I agree, look on Amazon for sales. Also check Macy/Bloomingdales and other similar department stores as sometimes their store sales and coupons can get you a really great deal.

    Consider size - are you cooking for 1-2 people? You won't need more than a 7-cup unless you plan to make large batches for your freezer or canning.

    Yes, I'm typically cooking for just 1 or 2, but eventually would like to keep in mind for small friend gatherings and freezing... I was considering a Cuisinart Elite 12 cup because I like the idea of having additional bowls - esp if I want to chop then grate, etc. Or perhaps I could considering a way to just purchase additional bowls on any particular model. Hmmm? Thoughts? My kitchen is only about 9x10 which isn't tiny like a small loft, but I think if I'm going to invest and actually use it, then leaving it on the counter with my cutting boards is the best... More things always to ponder; sometimes I wish I wasn't so dang analytical.

    To make you feel better, my kitchen is 7x9. I do understand that every square inch matters and purchasing an appliance requires thought. Mine typically sits on the counter next to the knives.

    I like the 11 cup and use it at least 2-4 times a week but I typically make meals that serve at least two if not four as it makes it easier for me when I have leftovers in the frig. It is a good size for smaller dinner parties (2-6 people).

    For what it's worth I wouldn't want the extra bowls as it would be one more thing to store and I find I can easily clean the bowl and blade between tasks. Between different veggies, I'll typically do little more than a hot water rinse. (imho, there is a lot of stuff to store already with the various blades and the alternate top) but you need to determine your storage capabilities.

    FYI, like a blender, an easy way to clean a food processor after mixing up something messy is to put a bit of water and dish soap in the bowl and turning it on for a minute and then rinse well.
