    Extreme Weight Loss

    Shop Now
Hello all! I am now on my 4th day of Primal Living. I was interested that Mark claims it is not like a typical "diet", in that there won't be excessive water and muscle loss that although shows weight loss on the scales, does not represent good "net" weight loss.

However, having just weighed myself on the scales, I notice that I have lost 6 pounds in 4 days!

Any obvious explanation for this? I don't want to be losing muscle!

I lost a lot in my first week too. I think most of it was a reduction in bloating and inflammation. It's now settled down to slow and steady weight loss.

Don't stress about it! You won't be losing muscle that quickly!

If you're like most of us, you'll probably see a pretty steady 2-3 lb a week weight loss from here out. Don't panic, just move slowly and lift heavy things. And eat your eggs!

I must have misread Mark because I thought he said that the Primal/Paleo diet didn't cause water loss.

    I wouldn't worry - I lost 10lb the first week - since then I've lost a steady 2lb a week on average.
    1st June 11 to 30st Aug 11 - 36lb removed in 13 weeks
Messed about on and off for the rest of the year

June 2012 - Had the practice - now time to do it for real

Any woe that changes your intake of salt, or just changes how you eat, is likely to cause an initial loss of excess water weight which CW will certainly give you.
I just did a quick search on my Kindle edition and didn't find anything about water weight. What chapter/page are you looking at?

I was a sugarbaby; meaning since I was born I was given lots of sugar, and ate lots of processed foods, especially sweets until I was into my thirties. Most people in the west were/are sugarbabies.

Tomewer, hello and welcome to MDA! Congratulations on being proactive with your health.

In order for us to tell you where/why the weight was lost you'll need to provide a bit more info.
What was your previous diet like?
What have you been eating for the last 4 days (since starting primal)?
What was your weight to start with?

Almost certainly you lost water weight. 6 lbs in 4 days is too rapid of a drop to be muscle, or even fat. I don't recall reading anything in the Primal Blueprint about PB not causing water loss initially, but I could be wrong (it's been a long time since I've read it). In any case, I can't imagine Mark would say that. Whether you lose water or not depends on how much you were retaining to begin with, and how you eat primally when you switch. Let me ask, have you cut back on your carbs since going primal? If so, then that's going to cause you to lose a lot of water weight over the first few days (stored carbohydrates hold about 3x their weight in water).

carbs hold more water in your body than any other nutrient. When you cut carbs, you cut your water retention.

Thank you everyone for your comments!

I may have completely misread Mark. Upon reflection, he perhaps may have alluded to weight loss from other diets solely resulting in water/muscle loss - I may have inferred that the Primal Blueprint therefore doesn't. I can't find the relevent part of the book - I've read quite a bit more since then!

My previous diet was awful. Regular takeaways (Italian, Indian, fish and chips), often had foot long Subways for lunch. Cereal for breakfast. Snacking on chocolate. Not great!

You can check out my journal to see what I have been eating: http://www.marksdailyapple.com/forum...tml#post506671

So far today (day 4) I had another Mexican chicken salad for breakfast, and a chicken breast with mushrooms for lunch. Planning on having homemade meatballs with tomato sauce for dinner (as per day 1).

My weight was 206lb to start. I'm 6'1" and quite broad so have carried the weight fairly well.
