Fruit for maintaining weight and pregnancy?

    Primal Fuel
I know fruit is sugar, which is why I'm concerned about the amount I've been having to eat. Basically I lost too much weight and had to gain some back to attempt pregnancy. That's my thinking at least. However, to maintain this weight I have to eat about two to three pieces of fruit a day ranging from berries to cantaloupe to peaches....you get the idea. Otherwise I start to lose weight again. Is this healthy to maintain my weight? What about when I get pregnant? Is this much fruit bad for the baby in the long run or is it ok since it's fruit, which has the pulp/fiber mixed with the sugar?

    Thank you!

Could you eat a sweet potato or a potato or white rice... Something with startch rather than fructose?

Fruit is a key item in the Primal Pyramid - I personally don't think fruit should be avoided at all, just moderate the amount if you want to lose weight and try to have berries by preference.

Well sweet potatoes yes but not potatoes or white rice. I'm a firm believer in those being avoided 99% of the time. I eat a sweet potato a week now to try and maintain but not every night.

I'm thinking I may just have to eat more meat everyday. That will be tough, though, as I already get filled up quickly on so little.

I don't see any problem with it if it makes you feel good. If you are not looking to lose weight and don't have issues regarding fructose malabsorption, diabetes, etc I personally would not worry about it and eat up that yummy fruit. Keep it varied if you like. I would eat until you are satisfied of whatever primal foods you feel like having...

Well I guess my main concern is gestational diabetes when I get pregnant. Has anyone heard of someone getting that from eating too much fruit while pregnant?

In the short term, you can't get diabetes from specific foods. In the long term, when your blood sugar goes over 140 (number from mice, general process validated in human cadavers) it poisons and kills your beta cells (insulin producing cells). So once you are on the diabetes track, it's a self-propelled treadmill into worsened diabetes, unless the blood sugar is controlled. Hope that makes sense.

    I highly doubt it.

Please be careful with that close monitoring of your weight and sugar while pregnant/trying. This gets to be dangerous territory for a growing baby. Fruit is absolutely fine. If you lose weight readily if you withdraw fruit, that is a concern. You should be sure you are getting enough meat and fats, and nuts. Babies without enough calories going in, and especially fats do not fare as well. Their brains need lots of fats to develop naturally. If you are planning on trying for a baby, you need some reserve of weight if you lose it that quickly. This could get bad if you are pregnant and nauseated and can't eat. There is a fine line between healthy habits and eating too little/restricting. Be very careful that it doesn't get too out of hand...The whole point of this primal lifestyle thing is to not have to monitor things too much, and eat what you crave...and feel good.
