"Copper is the crucial element for producing the color in hair and skin, for maintaining the elasticity of skin and blood vessels, for protecting against certain types of free radical, and especially for allowing us to use oxygen properly for the production of biological energy. It is also necessary for the normal functioning of certain nerve cells (substantia nigra) whose degeneration is involved in Parkinson's disease. The shape and texture of hair, as well as its color, can change in a copper deficiency. Too much iron can block our absorption of copper, and too little copper makes us store too much iron. "Zinc deficiency is thought to interfere with vitamin A metabolism in several ways: (1) zinc deficiency results in decreased synthesis of retinol binding protein (RBP), which transports retinol through the circulation to tissues (e.g., the retina) and also protects the organism against potential toxicity of retinol; (2) zinc deficiency results in decreased activity of the enzyme that releases retinol from its storage form, retinyl palmitate, in the liver; and (3) zinc is required for the enzyme that converts retinol into retinal."
Seven groups of 10 healthy subjects received various combinations of zinc and the two vitamins A and D, namely: zinc, vitamin A, vitamin D, zinc plus vitamin A, zinc plus vitamin D, vitamins A and D, and zinc plus vitamins A and D. Plasma zinc levels were determined at baseline, 3 weeks and 6 weeks. Plasma zinc levels increased significantly (p < 0.02) from 11.82 (+/-2.60) to 13.32 (+/-3.04) mum/L only in the group receiving the combination of zinc and vitamins A and D.
