    Hunger on High Fat Diet

    Primal Fuel
Has anyone experienced this? I googled and could only find people that were less hungry when eating lots of fatty foods. I find it hard to believe I'm the only one with this problem. I've been eating like a pig lately and still wake up hungry. I experienced this while doing a keto diet, too.
I'm retraining and strengthening my taste buds, one primal meal at a time.

You are definitely not the first person I've heard say they were hungry. I'm no expert but I've read a lot of other people's posts and here are some things that might be an issue:

Fat is good for fuel but you may be deficient in something that your body wants so you keep getting signals. Are you eating lots of veggies? Some people have also mentioned thirst signals being misinterpreted as hunger signals so to drink some water when you first start feeling hungry. Other people just feel better with a different macro nutritional profile play with your carb/protein/fat balance. And lastly, this is not necessarily a low calorie diet, so maybe just eat more.

How long have you been doing this?

I agree. If it's not working, try something else. Make sure you are drinking enough water, and get some good fiber us veggies if you aren't already (I try to get 2 cups of greens a day).

Eta: I'd also suggest tracking your food using one of the free trackers. If you don't track you'll have a more difficult time making a correlation between your food and what works and what doesn't.

You said you wake up hungry. Sounds normal to me. I'm ready to eat a feast when I wake up. I got up early yesterday because I was dreaming of the steak I was going to grill for breakfast.

Also, what do you call 'high fat'? After years of being told 'low fat' is good, just eating normal levels of fat is considered high fat to most, when in fact it isn't. I aim for around 160g per day which I find helps me.

I agree with the waking up hungry, isn't that the way it's meant to be?

its quite possible what you feel as hunger may actually be thirst

also make sure you are eating enough protein, its what will help quench your hunger

Funny that people mention thirst because I am very thirsty on a high fat diet, too. I always drank at least 6 glasses of water a day, but now it's more and I even wake up 1-2 times in the middle of the night to drink water. Maybe I need even more water, though it's not like I've been limiting myself.

The only thing that really changes when I go high fat (besides a decrease in carb intake) is I eat a lot more eggs and nuts. My vegetable intake is still decent (2+ cups a day), but I'm sure it can be increased. Protein intake is good (never under 100g). I'm not tracking macros closely anymore because I really need to disconnect primal from the dieting that I'm so used to doing in the past, but with all the mayo, red meat, nuts, and eggs I eat, I'm pretty should my fat intake is at least 50%. And my calories are higher, in part, because I've traded fruits for nuts.

I'm not used to waking up hungry, so it's odd to me (especially when I'm taking in more calories now).

I think you're eating enough, on the water front though, yesterday I was watching a talk on youtube where the speaker mentions the lack of salt in the water people drink and suggested adding some salt to water to aid in the absorption of which. He (the guy from MobilityWOD) said that sometimes water doesn't get fully absorbed so adding some salt helps in that absorption. He mentions it in the talk he had at Google regarding sitting properly and also briefly goes over how to stand to work as well. I watched because I've been standing at work for about 3 weeks now.

He didn't go anywhere near the science of why he thinks that might happen so it might be a little bogus, but I trust his knowledge in the area of mobility and flexibility (for which you need proper lubrication: water) so there may be something to that.

Maybe a few glasses of semi-salty water might help your hydration issues. I have nothing in the way of what you're hungry.

I like a variety of nuts. Right now I'm on a cashew kick. Yesterday I ate 2 cups and today I had a cup. (Ran out, so no more for today.)

The water and salt thing is interesting. I don't drink tap water (mine tastes and smells disgustedly like bleach way too often). I buy water from a store that purifies it by reverse-osmosis. Maybe that takes away the salt, too? I never thought about salt in drinking water being important. I do put salt on my hard-boiled eggs, but that doesn't count, eh? I'll try adding a little salt to my water and see if that help any.
