    Sugarfree gum

    Primal Fuel
Hi, I'm on day 7 so far. Carb flu is kicking in, but not too bad, just feel a little fatigued, and maybe a pinch of a headache this morning.

My question is about gum, specifically sugarfree mint gum. I started chewing gum when I quit smoking, and was quite addicted for a while. It has definitely rolled back to a couple pieces a day, after lunch or maybe in the car.

Is this okay on a primal diet? I could probably give it up easily, but I still would like a piece after lunch, so I can feel confident that my breath isn't stinky at work.

I searched for something about gum, and nothing came up (maybe I just did it wrong?).

    I chew sugar-free gum.

    I also chew on straws.

If it is a real concern for you you could probably buy some mint leaves to chew on now and then....

It's no problem. And when it's sweetened with xylitol it's actually good for you(r teeth). Mark wrote a blog post about this some time ago as well.

But if it's aspartame, it's toxic. I suggest the OP read the label carefully.

True! I had no clue there was gum sweetened with aspertame. Around here nearly all gum is sweetened with xylitol .

I wish I could chew sugar free gum, but it just feed the insanity for more sugared up stuff and makes me dissatisfied with the taste of real food. Ymmv.

I accidentally did not read ingredients and gave myself one of those whopping migraines where you can't even speak a coherent thought or see straight...(I waitress these days in a super busy restaurant). After fumbling through a few tables and screwing everything up (totally not my style) I slowly told my managers that I literally could not function for a while...the only thing I could attribute it to was ...sugar free gum. I am more of an Altoids girl..but for whatever reason I picked up a new brand of gum.....NEVER do that again!

I have a seizure disorder so I am really careful about aspartame. I also agree with what loafingcactus said. You need to get your tastebuds away from the sweetness if you are going to get the cravings to go away.

Sweet tastes can raise insulin, so if you need to lose weight, have sugar cravings, it's better to avoid sugarfree items. I had to kick a major diet Coke habit.
