Lack of Gall Bladder and fat issues

    Primal Fuel
I've read that the gall bladder releases some kind of bile salts that are made in the liver that have something to do with fat usage. My mother had hers taken out so does that mean she doesn't have any of these bile salts or does the liver still make and release them since she has no gall bladder?

I've heard people mention this ox bile thing and people without gall bladders. Is that meant to replace the bile salts that are no longer made/released without a gall bladder? Also would it be beneficial to take something like that without changing diet? At this point I don't think she is going to go primal with me though I hope to try and get her to at least eat less carbs, but was wondering if just using ox bile might help her health.

If you have a gall bladder, the bile is saved up for when you eat fat. For people with a low fat diet, it gets saved so much that it forms stones. Without the bladder, the bile just goes out as it is made, whether there is fat present or not. For some people this causes some loose stool. Some people have loose stool after surgery that resolves after a while. A lot of people never notice any kind of difference at all (self included).

The gall bladder is essentially a storage unit; as loafingcactus said, your body still makes bile, it just gets released into your digestive tract immediately instead of sitting in storage. I had mine out three years ago, and although I had some issues with red meat at first, everything seems to be chugging along fine now. Unless fatty foods are giving your mom digestive troubles, she doesn't really need to take ox bile.

I've read that ALL people without a gallbladder should take ox bile (bile salts) whether you have obvious symptoms or not. (Unless you eat a very low fat diet, which us paleo people do not). They are easy enough to get at a health food store or online. I take enzymes with ox bile after every meal. I would start out with a low dose though since too much could cause diahrrea.

Without it you may not be getting the full benefit of the fats that you eat, as some just won't be broken down enough. JMO based on reading.
