Thread: Good Fat vs. Bad Fat page

    If there is such a thing...


    Basically, I'm wondering if there are "better" types of fats we should try to eat on a daily basis and save the less than optimal fats for 1-2 times per week instead of everyday eating.


    For example, instead of eating sausages everyday, should we aim to eat eggs, fish, chicken doused in coconut oil? Is it more effective for weight loss to stick to fats such as avocados and coconut oils?


    This question came to mind as I was reading other posts about "good" carbs and I began to wonder if there was such a thing for fats.

    CJ: There are others on this Forum who are much more well versed in this than I, but yes: there are GOOD fats. Coconut oil is one of them. I have felt really good, and my skin got SO much better, since I started using CO for cooking. If the mild coconutty flavor doesn't go with what I'm making, I also use Ghee, which is clarified butter.


    Shoot---I'm IF-ing right now, and all of a sudden I'm hungry ;-)

    Avoid trans fats (margarine, etc) and vegetable oils except for olive oil. Make sure you get enough saturated fats from meat, butter, coconut oil.

    Primal eating in a nutshell: If you are hungry, eat Primal food until you are satisfied (not stuffed). Then stop. Wait until you're hungry again. Repeat.

    I understand that grass-fed butter also has tons of great health benefits. I love the taste and use it pretty much with anything.

    As Griff says, avoid processed, manmade "frankenfats" and eat liberal quantities of natural fats -- coconut, nuts, avocado, palm, olive, animal, etc.


    You can think of it this way: If it won't spoil, don't eat it! (Ever seen a moldy Twinkie?)

    I second everyone else. Go for natural fats on meat plus butter (grass-fed if you can), nuts, avocado, olive oil, coconut oil etc.. Avoid all vegetable fats and trans fats.


    Sausages are what I'd consider a "treat". Unless you make them yourself or know the butcher, you can never really be sure of what they're putting in them. So, I consider them processed food and try to limit them.

    Thanks for confirming my thoughts!


    I guess I am wondering if I can make certain types of meats (thick cut, dry rub bacon, prime rib, etc.) my main choices of fats as opposed to chicken breasts doused in EVOO or coconut oil? Or will the latter provide more efficiency in burning fat?

    And you're right about the sausages. Good reminder. I don't eat the "brown n serve" kinds but do buy from a local market that makes them using organic pork and other natural ingredients.
