    Extreme tiredness immediately after eating?

    Primal Fuel
Just ate lunch - a can of tuna with 3TBS mayo and 2 baby dill pickles - and almost instantly afterwards I feel a desperate tiredness, like I absolutely must lay down for half an hour. It's not just today though, it's been happening a lot lately after I eat. I thought it might be an insulin thing, but doesn't that take a while to kick in? I think may a problem with adrenaline, as I am very jumpy, sensitive to coffee. I eat very low carb under 50 grams mostly. Eating lots of carbs makes me sleepy too.

Same here. I don't know why. It certainly is better if I stick to a small, low-carb meal, but that is not a 100% cure the way some claim. Someone could claim it is high blood sugar, but I test and even for those meals that don't overly affect my blood sugar it happens. Fortunately, I work at home so my nap is just part of my lunch hour and I also get a little 20 minute nap after breakfast. If I'm forced to stay awake, I'm fine after an hour.

    Happens to me too.

Within a half hour after breakfast I'm starting to nod off. I'm a librarian and I sit at a desk a lot of the time which doesn't help the sleepy feeling. Usually passes off after about an hour. This isn't a good thing since I'm at work. I sleep well and get plenty of rest. I want to know what causes it.

    I do the same thing.

Eating a low-carb diet and getting quality sleep helps with it, but doesn't completely eliminate it.

It's natural for humans to become tired after eating. It has to do with the parasympathetic nervous system which tells the body that it's time to "rest and digest". This can be a problem, especially for people who work desk jobs. If you work while standing up and moving around then this shouldn't be as big of a problem.

Well, I'm glad I'm not alone in this, anyways! It feels so powerful the urge to sleep sometimes that I wonder what on earth is going on. But I agree eating lower carb and having cat naps helps.

insulin resistance? I had that too, but only happens after carbs or too many carbs.
I'm too stubborn to give up so I keep on trying.

Forgot to mention that I eat very low carb. Breakfast is usually 2 hard boiled eggs, a hunk of leftover steak or roast beef (little hunk) and sometimes a half an avocado.

I used to get like that a LOT. But that was before I had weight loss surgery a couple years ago. Now I never get like that. I think it might have something to do with the amount of food (and possibly fat & carbs) one eats. It doesn't matter what I eat now; I don't get like that. So for me, it was purely the volume.
