    Low-calorie diet cures type-2 diabetes?

    Primal Fuel
Low-calorie diet offers hope of cure for type 2 diabetes | Society | The Guardian

An interesting study promoting the use of fasting as a cure for type-2 diabetes. Won't surprise any of you but it's always good to be reminded of the benefits of Primal living.

It was a low calorie diet for 8 weeks - 600 calories per day which consisted of 3 diet shakes and some salad and non- starchy veg. Great results. They did this study to confirm whether bariatric surgery has some hormonal effect or whether it was the low calorie adopted afterwards that cured the diabetes 2 of patients. With this study they think it's the low calorie diet. I would be tempted to try it if I had type 2 but scarily low calories.

That article irritated me because any use of "cure" irritates me. Or perhaps it's just that we need a better definition of "diabetes". By the time you a diabetic, a certain percentage of your beta cells are dead. Forever. It doesn't get cured, it gets managed through diet and exercise. But then it's "not diabetes" so that management doesn't count. Ugh.

I think beta cells can start functioning again. I should do a search on this.

Dead ones can't. In the study, the lives ones started functioning better, they theorized, because of less fatty infiltration. But the dead ones are still dead.

It's not low-calorie that cures diabetes, it's low-carb. CW will never wrap its collective heads around that concept; they're too married to the "healthywholegrains" b.s.
Primal eating in a nutshell: If you are hungry, eat Primal food until you are satisfied (not stuffed). Then stop. Wait until you're hungry again. Repeat.

I have just read about this in the Telegraph. It seems that it was not just low calories but also low fat - which they said improved pancreatic function. So - demonising fat again.

but any diet that low in calories is low in carbs--right? Isn't this really just a super lowcarb diet?

No, it's an idiot's diet. No carbs AND no fat? What are you supposed to run on? Protein isn't fuel.

Not to mention the fact that anyone put on that kind of a diet would be psychologically screwed up in very short order due to starvation effects.
