i have a huge jug of this stuff.... dunno what kind of protein powder it is actually, never used it lol
Hi All,
I have read quite a bit on this website weighing in on the choice of dairy vs. no dairy, and obviously it's a personal choice I think. I just wanted to kind of "poll" the audience and see if anyone has had similar experiences as I am having. I've been drinking quite a few whey/casein blend protein shakes lately (high quality from grass fed New Zealand cows, low heat processing). I have noticed that I've been extremely tired lately where I feel like I'm a zombie all day and even though I'm getting 8 hours of sleep I wake up feeling like I can't get out of bed. I have been eating primally for several months now (with a few cheats of grain/bread) and have no idea if it's because of the low carb or the dairy. Has anyone ever felt tired from eating dairy? I think I may have an allergy. I guess I could cut it out and see what happens, but just wanted to get some feedback from others.
Thanks!
Jaime

Are these shakes crowding out whole foods?

I am eating plenty of whole fruits and veggies and grass fed meats/fishes. I have just been drinking probably 1 a day after the gym or as a quick breakfast or dinner on the occassion that I am too busy to cook something. I usually add some fresh or frozen berries and sometimes some spinach or mint to the shakes as well for some extra greens.
How long have you been eating PB/paleo for? If you are still starting out than it can be the carb flu. Normally when people have dairy issues or lactose intolerance it usually manifests itself as gut irritation or some sort of digestive upset. If you aren't feeling that I don't think its a dairy issue. Also, I am lactose intolerant but whey shakes have little to no effect on my digestion. Drinking conventional milk or eating conventional milk does. But not good quality whey alone.

People say I am on a "crazy" diet. What is so crazy about eating veggies, fruits, seafood and organ meats? Just because I don't eat whole wheat and processed food doesn't make my diet "crazy". Maybe everyone else with a SAD are the "crazy" ones for putting that junk in their system.
What Balance said
Personally, I drink a whey smoothie made with coffee and heavy cream almost every morning, and I have plenty of energy throughout the day. Also, I'm betting it's more likely adjusting to low-carb than dairy, as Balance said, most dairy issues exhibit in digestive problems or skin issues (acne).
Best of luck!
Is it blended with anything else?whey/casein blend
My understanding of the two proteins is whey is pretty benign, but Casein (like gluten) causes "leaky gut." I used to drink a whey/coconut milk shake every day but haven't in quite a while. I never had any problems, but that's just me.
The "zombie" issue sounds like carb flu, but not if you've been primal for several months. That should have subsided within a few days, or if you're like me, about 6 weeks. After a year and a half I've changed my mind about fruit so I would suggest adding some fruit in there to see if that helps.
I was on soft food diet for about 2 months due to an intestinal surgery and complications, so I started mixing a low carb whey protein isolate shake once or twice a day. I stopped doing it when I got my last blood tests back. Everything was usual, except my triglycerides nearly doubled. I mentioned this on a different forum and some others reported the same thing. Someone also commented that they did not see this at all. I think it can act just like too much sugar.
You know, I had started mixing some whey protein shakes or smoothies in the morning when I kicked coffee recently. I needed a new morning ritual, ha ha, and I figured I could use the extra protein in the summer when I just do not eat as much in general. But After a few days of headaches from the caffeine withdrawal, I felt, I don't know, sluggish? run down? Don't know what to attribute it to , so I will try for a bit or maybe ditch it, I really prefer to eat FOOD, so maybe me just eating way less protein all summer will be ok. It usually is. I was wondering if anyone else had energy issues with whey. I consume some dairy, but keep it in check most of the time. No milk. Some cheese, cream, butter.
this was a great question and one that i could answer based on experience. at one point during my primal adventure i ditched my whey and casein and went with non dairy powders (rice, soy and gemma pea) and i actully felt worse. i went straight back to whey and casein and felt fine. i think the levels are so low its not that big of a deal. i only drink one shake per day now and its a stack of casein (all natural) and whey (all natural)
