Thread: How does one sense insulin spike? page

    Primal Fuel


    I hear people mention in the forum that their insulin spikes after eating certain foods? How does one detect it in the absence of glucometers? Pre-primal, I could never stop with one serving of dessert and had constant cravings which I'm sure is because of the blood sugar imbalance. But now, I'm not sure when I have an insulin spike. I have the "you can never eat just one" with nuts. Does that mean nuts spike my insulin? Would you throw some light on insulin spikes, their signs and symptoms?

    I don't know if this is indicitive of everyone, but I've started noticing after eating grains/sugars that I feeling like I'm flushing/blushing over my whole body and that my blood pressure feels like it has jumped. It's a little like being buzzed, but not in a pleasant way...if that makes any sense.


    However, I have no idea if this is actually an insulin spike or just a natural process in food digestion that I don't notice because I'm not looking for it unless I eat sugar/grains. I've never used a glucometer so have no hard evidence in that sense.

    I don't know if you can actually "feel" an insulin spike. I do know that both Dr. Michael Eades (of Protein Power) and Dr. Richard Bernstein (of Diabetic Revolution) both say that eating any more than 10-12g of carbs at a single meal will evoke insulin--i.e., by keeping carbs to 10-12g, a person can avoid insulin spikes. I try to do that as much as possible, although it's not easy.

    You can feel a sugar spike, but an insulin spike is.... well, it's kind of like high blood pressure. It's a silent killer. There's no real way to detect it without a blood test.

    Primal eating in a nutshell: If you are hungry, eat Primal food until you are satisfied (not stuffed). Then stop. Wait until you're hungry again. Repeat.

    Thanks for your input everyone!


    Griff, what are the symptoms of a sugar spike (sorry, if it's been covered before)? Off late, I've noticed, bloating when I eat anything non-primal. The other day I had a primal dinner followed by a couple of pieces of 85% dark chocolate and my tummy felt really bloated. The following day, I had no bloating w/ an unsweetened piece of dark chocolate.

    maba: I get the shakes when I have a sugar spike. I feel really lightheaded and spacy. My lips get numb. My vision gets blurry.


    Of course, these are also the symptoms of a sugar drop, so... take that for what it's worth.

    That's how I felt yesterday after eating a lot of broccoli! Granted I had just come off a 24 hour fast - is that supposed to happen?

    I feel flushed, get lightheaded/spacey, sometimes the back of my neck will sweat, feel tired, feel like I need to go lay down, hard to focus....basically, feel like crap.


    My hemoglobin A1c had been hovering right at 5.9 (ack!), and my mom had diabetes. Getting this down is one of my prime objectives for going Primal. I&#39;ll get new labs drawn in January. Quite curious to see the results now.


    Raphael: That could be indicative of a sensitivity (light allergy) to broccoli, not necessarily a sugar spike.

    go_ginger_go, it was a lot of broccoli at once. And I forgot to mention that I also had a few sips of tea with stevia... which had less than 1 gram of carbs in it. Is that enough for a sugar spike???
