    Family Primal-Where Primal is a Family Affair

    I really enjoy reading other people's journals so I thought maybe I would start one too.

    We are a family of four currently. I have four kids but to live with their dad at the moment. Here is the cast of characters you may encounter in this journal

    My husband 33 weights about 280 pounds (when we met he was probably about 350!), has type 2 diabetes. high blood pressure, and his triglycerides and cholesterol were through the roof last year when he was hospitalized. He works on his feet all day as a retail asset protection dude. When he is off he is on his bum nerding it up on World of Warcraft. This was not always the case. He really wants to become a cop but fears he can't pass the physical tests.

    I am 34, weigh between 212 and 220 and have no dangerous health problems. I do however have thinning hair, dark circles under my eyes, dull skin, and ZERO energy. I am a stay at home mom who unschools her kids but barely have energy to accomplish that or anything else I enjoy.

    My daughter is 11 and weighs about 115 pounds, she is tall but has a little belly. Her teeth are not good (runs in the family) and she has had eczema since she was a newborn. She gets dehydrated easily.

    My youngest son is 8. He worries me a lot because he used to have a sturdy yet not chubby body. He is starting to fill out. His teeth are not great either. Diabetes runs in my husband's family and mine, I do not want to see him become diabetic before he is a teen (or at all). He struggles with constipation.

    My older boys are nearly 13 and 15. They are a whole other bunch of fun! LOL TEENS!

    About 5 years ago I discovered Nourishing Traditions. I was feeding my family that style diet as well as locally. We moved and my husband went through a time of unemployment and that is when our eating went all to heck. As much as I tried to get back on track a lot of bad habits creeped in and I did not realize it until recently. I decided I needed to do something before my children's health got worse or my husband died. I can't take living like a zombie. I want to get out and enjoy nature, garden, keep my house clean, etc. I discovered the Paleo diet and that lead me to the primal blue print. I have not read the book yet but I read as much as possible. It all made sense.

    This Wednesday we jumped in with both feet. My kids were a little resistant and upset about the changes but so far only a couple complaints. They had a fit over me saying we would not eat grains for awhile but the funny thing is I left the bread on the stove and some crackers and they have not touched them or asked for them. In general I am thrilled because now that they are eating no grains, no processed sugar, and lower carbs they are not begging for food 24-7. It is WONDERFUL and if that was the only good thing that came from this I would be happy. They were constantly in the food, I think it was because they were eating so many grains and faux foods even when they were organic or natural.

    Monday May 9 (day 6 of primal life)

    Dang it is hot today. I think it is the first day I have been uncomfortabley hot since moving to this house.

    Today was kind of unplanned and is looking to be a little weird. I am trying to just listen to my hunger but keep my fat high, protein good and carbs low. I eat what I feel like and when I am hungry. So far so good, I lost some weight and I have not had to exercise like a crazy person or starve! LOVE IT!

    Me-
    1 hard boiled egg

    pile of turkey

    cashew butter, 2 small apples

    dinner will be a not-so-primal pasta sauce (low in sugar though) with grain-free meatballs, turkey sausage, peppers and onions. I am going to try serving this on some shredded cooked cabbage and a side of veggies

    Husband-

    2 hard boiled eggs

    salad with meat and cheese

    not-so-primal V-8 juice

    banana

    Same dinner as I am having

    DD11-

    Did not ask for breakfast

    taco salad

    pistachios

    piece of turkey

    same dinner

    smoothie

    DS 8-

    suffering from constipation still. Increase in fiber seems to have caused it. Gave him apple juice since that usually clears him up. No luck. He will not eat too much until he gets moving again. He is out playing right now and I hope that might help shake things loose. TMI!!!!

    Also did not ask for breakfast but had a meat stick

    I am feeling really good and very encouraged because of the weight loss. I felt pretty crappy this weekend but am better today. I think it was a female thing. I want to start being more active and hope that my energy goes up soon. We are HOPEFULLY moving next week (better be because our rental is being foreclosed on in 11 days) and I love a fresh start

    Congratulations on setting your family on the right path. Hopefully you won't all hit the carb flu at the same time

    oh my goodness! i can't believe i didn;t see this earlier, but your post reminded me. one perk of primal living is that i've had enough energy to clean the house AND THEN still have enough left to play with the kids afterward! sometimes i even have some left for myself after they're in bed. anyway, welcome to the threads.

    btw, magnesium citrate and plenty of water should help with the constipation.

    Another hot day today but we braved a family day at the park. We did some sad shooting of hoops, my 11yo daughter got more baskets than anyone. We also played some frisbee and walked a little. The kids played on the playground a little. I love homeschooling because we can go during the school day and have the whole place to ourselves. Heat and sun always gives me a headache though.

    Eating was all over the place because we ran errands and stuff. There were some luna bars, meat, hard boiled eggs, etc. I had put a beef roast in the slow cooker this morning with some onions and spices. I added carrots and parsnips toward the end. When it was cooked I added some left over cooked shredded cabbage. We had all of this with broccoli.

    I got my husband to try his coffee with coconut milk. Well actually it is coconut cream, I was looking for the highest fat content at the Asian market and did not realize that is what I grabbed. Anyway he liked it. He used to be such a dairy fiend, when we met he was drinking a gallon of milk a day. I put an end to that real fast. If we had our own herd of grass fed cows I might not be so worried.

    Well I think I am going to make the kids a smoothie and cut up some fruit for tomorrow.

    It has been a couple days since I updated. It has been super crazy here. I do a couple small work from home jobs but I am trying to apply for something that will pay a bit more. We are also getting ready to move any day now. There are not enough hours in the day for everything I need to do and my energy is still not the best.

    Food wise I am trying to run down the food we have in the house before we move. I let the kids finish some very non-primal fish products up from the freezer. We are really poor so throwing expensive food like that away is not an option, although I have thrown some things away. We are getting low on produce and the meat variety is low so I think it is time for a small shopping trip.

    A wonderful side effect has shown up for both myself and my husband. We both need to eat a lot less and are often not even hungry. Pre-primal my husband would come home from work at night, eat a huge dinner and then the whole night was a snack festival. Now he comes home and sometimes he is not even that hungry. I don't even eat most days until 1pm because I am just not hungry. This is especially true when the day before I ate a lot of fat

    Still crazy here. Working, packing, working some more. Today I packed up all the grain and legume foods I had in my pantry. I threw some items in the trash. I am not willing to throw it all away or donate it because I believe in keeping emergency food on hand. I put it in boxes and put a label on it that said "grain foods do not unpack".

    Our eating is kind of weird because I am pulled in so many directions. Here is what my day looked like

    B-3 dried apple pieces my son did not like and I did not want to waste

    L-2 hard boiled eggs and leftover cole slaw

    S-whipped up some cream (weird I know)

    D-a few curry meatballs and veggies cooked with a bit of bacon

    I have been doing really well on the high fat end of the spectrum. I am losing weight, don't feel hungry, ect.

    My husband has a pleasant development. He is directly attributing it to the change in diet. He is feeling very vital and young....wink wink.....he says he feels like he is 20 again. I will leave it at that.

    Lastly...Yesterday I had a miscalculation with my meat thawing time. It was 6:30 and the meat was rock hard. I did not have anything else primal available and I do not live near a store and my husband had our vehicle. I ended up making homemade pizza. Wo, I felt awful after eating it. I felt jttery like I ate a bag of sugar. Not fun at all. I will try not to repeat that mistake anytime soon.

    I'm Back

    It has been 10 days since I last visited MDA. I have missed it.

    We moved. It was grueling. During the move we were NOT primal for a few days. I just do not have the experience under my belt yet to know how to make it work with no kitchen and no time. We ate pizza, sandwiches, McDonalds, and used up some meals with grains, etc I had frozen previously. We felt like heck. My son was hyper and bratty. Ugh! Lesson learned. My husband also learned a lesson about OTC pain medications and how you can overdose on them It was not a primal week at all.

    On a good note we had a lot of primal type exercise, we lifted and carried and cleaned for days. Basically my husband and I along with our 11 year old daughter moved the whole house in a mini van. We only had 2 hours of help with trucks to move the stuff we absolutely could not fit in the van. Even with eating garbage we lost some weight. Another good note. We aquired some less than perfect really processed breakfast sausage. My husband hated it and thinks his tastes are changing! Yay. Obviously our tastes have not changed enough since we could stomach fast food, but hey half the battle is in the mind and if he thinks his tastes have changed maybe he will not want other yucky stuff. Now if only the kids would change......

    We are back at it for the most part. I am kind of worried though. We spent a lot of money on food this month and I am not sure we can keep this up. We were blessed with a little extra this month and we used all of that too and our budgetary month still has about 12 days left. I am going to have to really crack down and figure out how to do this with less money.

    Just wanted to say hi and give some encouragement for your daughter. My whole family began eating primal in January. My daughter is 19 and has had terrible eczema, allergies, asthma since she was little. Miserable stuff, we had tried just about everything - specialists, all the traditional medications known to man, herbal treatments, mineral supplements and nothing would work completely. She is so much better in all three areas- it is really amazing the difference! We know for sure it is all in the diet because her skin flares up almost immediately when she slips up and has grain/sugar (we're not sure which is the major culprit yet). I would have given just about anything to have known about this when she was 11 so hang in there and keep encouraging your daughter -- it is worth it. We have seen lots of other health benefits but I haven't seen many post about eczema so just wanted to throw that out there. Have fun unpacking!

    My daughter actually fought me about the whole primal thing. She swore up and down that grains/gluten and/or dairy (which we have cut back on but not cut out) could not possibly cause her issues. Well after last weeks bad eating her eczema flared up something fierce! She came and told me that she guessed that I might be right. Ha ha ha, so Mom does know best after all!
