    Angry What is with people?

I was trying to post at a low carb forum. Crap! What was I thinking?

Since I've read about certain things, like refined sugars and grains, I really have gotten concerned about how I have been failing my children. Seriously, we were all at the same table, but if the kids didn't want to try the 'healthy' stuff I prepared, we'd pull out the frozen waffles, drown them in SF syrup, and that was dinner. I've been poisoning my kids, and I've started the correction process.

The other night, DH and I had a time getting them to even try the meat and veggies I'd prepared. So, I posted a rant about trying to feed them right, and I got attacked all over the place for taking away their sugar and their grains. It was unbelievable to me. The final straw was someone telling me that this so-called low carb forum was mainly 'Adkins' (not Atkins, mind you), so I shouldn't try to push my paleo views on them. How annoying.

I really didn't realize that saying I didn't want my kids to have grains and sugar was forcing my crazy paleo views on them. What a bunch of nutters. /rant
Your book club may have scintillating discussions. But my book club can drink your book club under the table.

But grains are pure carbs anyway, so shouldn't they have agreed?

Adkins people are a bit different than Primal people. I checked out an Adkins cookbook at the library because it was in the same section as another cookbook I knew was there from an internet search. Upon opening it I was amazed at how much the stuff relies on "low carb" versions of traditional food.

Pretty much, the entire thing is akin to eating the same stuff you'd make conventionally, but with the main ingredients some how "de-carbed" in some way. Weird.

I really think that the entire thing is setting those people up for failure. If everything is the same it makes it easier to go back to your old ways.

It's kinda like trying to break an addiction to porn and then getting a subscription to Maxim magazine. You can see how that would go south pretty fast. Same goes for eating.

And how might one go about breaking an addiction to porn? *shifty eyes*

I feel ya. I swear, people think you're depriving your child of a proper childhood. I'm not an absolutist, she will have treats, and I know I can't control everything she puts in her mouth. But if people had any idea how toxic this stuff is, they wouldn't push the issue. Ugh. Have the in-laws coming for a month soon and I'm worried about this. But what can I do?

Saoirse...isn't that what....never mind *needs brain bleach*

Bevaboo, don't stress it. I still feed my kid oatmeal. She loves the stuff and it seems to help with tummy issues. Doesn't matter how much fat, veggies, or fruit I give her she gets bound up and is miserable (which means I'm miserable too). Its her 20% and I mix in fresh fruit as sweetener so it can't be too horribly bad.

If they love syrup you can try to make fruit sauces for meat-those helped me a lot when kiddo was on her anti-protein kick. Some days all I did was mash up whatever fruit that looked good and was in the house, added it to some water and boiled the crud out it till it as syrup. Put a tablespoon over whatever meat (usually pork or chicken) and she loved it. She liked berries the best, apricot second best. For red meat I BBQ'd ribs and let her gnaw away.

    Good luck!

From my own experience as a kid, I know I started binge eating because sugar and sweets and stuff were restricted at home. Also as a teenager my mom had me pretty much restricted to a low-fat diet too. I know that I can trace my beginnings of ED and overeating back to that moment.

So while I'm not going to advocate feeding your kids carbs at every meal, I will caution you about banning the substances from the house, because it could wildly backfire: anything that is forbidden is expressly tempting for some people.

Not that I have kids myself, so obviously I have no experience of trying to cope with this kind of situation, but I'd have plenty of primal-type sweet stuff on hand too - dark chocolate and the like and not get too extreme about banning it (maybe talk about how the kids feel after eating the stuff, but don't outright ban it up front). If they can theoretically eat whatever they like while having primarily good choices around and being helped a long a little by you, I think it'll go along way further than any outright bans.

Adkins is seen by most people as a "diet" not a lifestyle. Their kids are not fat so they don't need to be on a "diet". It doesn't occur to these people that in 20 years their kids will be fat and on Adkins too.
