    How do you translate cholesterol figures in mmol/L

    Hello all,

    I'm just back from the doctors and he has some disturbing news for me on the Cholesterol front. I wanted to check up if it really was something to worry about or whether it was healthy primal figures. I've looked up Mark's treatise on Cholesterol and Griffs great post but they are using figures/units that don't look like mine.

    I'm living in Dublin, Ireland and my figures are all in mmol/L whereas Marks and Griffs I think are in mg/dL??? Does anyone know how to translate one into the other?

    I'd be most thankful of any assistance you can provide

    Okay so I did converted the figures I was given and got the following

    Total Cholesterol = 6.8mmol/L or 262mg/dL
    Trig = 1.24mmol/L or 109.8mg/dL
    HDL = 1.14 mmol/L or 44.08mg/dL
    LDL = 5.10 mmol/L or 197.2mg/dL

    My ratio's per Griffs post are

    Total/HDL 5.9
    Trig/HDL 2.5
    LDL/HDL 4.47

    Other measurements I got which worry me are
    C reactive protein 3.8mg/L
    blood sugar 5.6mmol/L

    I believe according to Griffs post I'm in a bit of trouble. I'm 32, male, 81.6kg and 1.75m tall and I've been following the Primal diet fairly rigidly. Am I right to be worried?

    If in mg/dl divide by 39. If in mmol/l multiply by 39.

    How long have you been following the diet? What exactly do you mean by following "fairly rigidly"? Do you exercise as described in the book? Do you smoke or drink? Are you suffering from stress?

    Hello Mozzy,

    I've been following it over the last year with varying degrees of success. But in the Last 6 months I've been Primal 6 months but I do cheat on Fridays (Generally with Fish in batter and Chips with milk choc for desert ) after I've been fasting since my previous dinner. I fast twice a week for approximately 24 hours (Tuesday and Friday).
    I've been following the stronglifts 5x5 plans for over a year, which to my mind fits in with what Mark says about lift heavy things 3 times a week. I cycle in and out of work 10 mile round trip every day but I don't do the sprints. I'm going to start them as soon as my laser eyes heal
    Stress, at the time of the test we were really busy in work and I never know if I'm going to have a job in 3 months time so I'd be probably above average in stress
    This is Ireland, I do drink a fair bit as it's the main socialising outlet in the country and the test was taken 2 months after Xmas which is basically 2-3 weeks of drinking and eating stuff you shouldn't.
    Anyway I'm confused out the ratio's. My wife thinks I'm okay with the figures but that my trigs are a bit high. I think they are all a bit high but my Glucose and C reative protein are what are causing concern about all my figures.

    Must be a different definition of rigid!

    Your Trigs and LDL need to be reduced. Alcohol and carbs are driving both up. Your HDL needs to be increased. Getting enough saturated fat. Glucose is high, again this is a carb problem. Guessing that you have systemic inflammation. Taking primal seriously will be a good start for you. You will likely have to be stricter than most and follow up with more testing and tweaks after you've stabilised
