    Extra Skin...

    Primal Fuel
My best friend lost over 80 lbs. using traditional weight loss methods. She now is really struggling with emotional eating and sees my results using the primal method. She would like to try it. Her only real issue with her body right now (putting aside emotional eating for the moment) is the additional skin left over on her stomach. It's just a small pooch, but she gets very self-conscious over it. She's very thin otherwise. I've noticed on here that many folks who were significantly overweight lost the weight, and have nice, tight abs. Is that related to eating this way and the cell repair available, or to body type/gene-makeup?

Does it feel kind of lumpy when she squeezes it, like there are little globules of stuff underneath? If so, then she has more fat to lose. How quickly did she lose it and how old is she?

Two year time span, and she is 33. I would think they may be some additional fat to lose, though she is very thin. 5'9" 145lbs.

I believe that the point of this lifestyle is about optimum health . Weight loss is a by-product of that . When you get your diet right , great things happen .

Simodalcais -- you don't have to convince me or her of that. But my curiosity is that I see impressive results -- something I know would help push her over the "too scared to believe I won't gain weight back" line because of how frustrated she is over the extra skin. It's not a lot of pooch, just a little. But when traditional methods have helped you lose 80 lbs., you are a bit hesitant to do anything different. But given that it has pushed her to near bulimia with her emotional eating (she is in therapy, no worries), she's been seeking another way of eating that won't leave her craving/hungry all the time, which isn't helping things. This is the answer, in MHO, but she needs some convincing.

I lost 80 lbs the traditional CW way. I still have a ways to go, but I can understand how she feels. I felt PB was right for me. It made more sense than killing myself on the hamster wheel. The heavy fat consumption was hard to overcome though. My friends are still afraid I'll put all my weight back on, and sometimes I am too. However, I just say to myself "I'd rather die with a bacon wrapped steak in my teeth, completely happy, than a bloated grain belly huffing and puffing on the treadmill!"
Now when I see low fat food, I frown and sigh "Aw, they took all the happy out of it."

Sorry to say this for your friend but sagging/extra skin is sometimes a by-product of weight loss. The only things that will help: surgery or supportive undergarments ("girdle").

If she does have additional fat to lose, that might help.

ETA: And I do think that things like who gets stretch marks, whose skin bounces right back, etc. is heavily influenced by genetics. I had stretch marks as a child and teen. As soon as I would have any growth spurt, the stretch marks would come!

The high-fat diet we Primes eat really helps here. That's the difference.

The stomach and neck skin in particular tends to lag.

Coconut oil on her stomach, alternating hot and cold water will help a bit. Just by noting how dewy it makes my face and what it does for my hair, I take lots of fish oil and I *think* it will help with the rest of my skin.

If she still needs more, there are lasers (noninvasive) that will tighten up the skin nicely (approx. $3000).

I'm sending her my best irt having lost a lot of weight and trying to navigate through the world that now treats you so differently. It's a head trip unlike any other.

I can't really speak to the extra skin, but I do want to offer a testimonial as someone who switched to PB after having success with traditional methods. When I first found PB in July of 2010, I had already lost close to 45 lbs the CW way (counting calories), and was planning to maintain my weight for a few months before worrying about dropping those last 10 "vanity" pounds. I was attracted to PB because experience taught me that I felt better on a high fat diet (even when I was counting calories, I never did the low fat thing), and because I was looking for a cure for my IBS.

I eased into Primal eating gradually, and was pretty much fully Primal by the end of August. Once my body adapted, I was surprised to find that I felt awesome - no more all-consuming sugar cravings, feeling hungry all the time, or going hypoglycemic. Essentially, it has made maintaining my weight loss effortless (and I'm not someone who was ever "naturally skinny"). Even after an overindulgent holiday season, I quickly dropped the extra 5 lbs I'd picked up once I went back to the PB.

Even better, my body composition has steadily improved. Finally getting my nutrition dialed in has made exercise far more productive, not to mention fun. I'm only 4 lbs lighter than I was last summer, but I've built significant amounts of muscle and have firmed up nicely. Some of my clothes are starting to get too big on me, and people keep asking if I'm losing weight.
The Primal Holla! Eating fat. Getting lean. Being awesome.
