    a beans vs peppers question

    Primal Fuel
there exists a body of evidence that legumes and nigtshades have a negative effect on a variety of health issues. given the choice, which would the members familiar with the data, research and antecdotal evidence feel is the better to delete from one's diet? i'm not asking someone to tell me to delete both. i'm looking for an informed data based opinion of which is the least deleterious. thanks for any input.

Nightshades include a host of reputable veggies and spices: eggplant, potatoes (yes, we know, not so reputable), peppers, tomatoes, tomatillos, pimentos, paprika, cayenne pepper, Tabasco sauce, et al. (Black pepper isn’t included in this list.

As I could pick a pepper and tomato off a plant and eat it I'd keep the nightshades.

Beans on the other hand have to be soaked and cooked to be edible. So I would and do avoid eating mass quantities of legumes.

hey thanks. that is somewhat in line with my thinking. leaving both out is just not doable IMHO. the remaing veg choices would be just just too few and too tasteless, especially with my DM based avoidance of fruit. i am playing around with various nuts to give salads some punch without resorting to dressings, all of which l i can find are full of toxins. anybody else?

Exactly I wouldn't want to live without spicy peppers!

A lot of the comments I've seen here (and elsewhere) say that you might as well try to do a week or two without nightshades and see if there's a difference. The point being that if you're not particularly sensitive to them, there is no reason not to eat them. But you might be and not even know it. I for one love peppers and tomatoes (and Sri Racha hot sauce, and Frank's Red Hot and...) and they don't seem to cause me any trouble, so I keep eating them. I know they're full of good stuff, too.

It's easy to skip the beans. The only place I really miss beans is in chili. Oh, plus my wife makes this really kicking Tuscan Lamb dish that has cannelloni beans, whose texture went extraordinarily well with the rich meat. But, oh well...easy enough so substitute broccoli or whatever.

yes-chili,no beans-not real good. love black beans and rice, but the rice is obviously an issue. what might one look for as an "improvement' when dropping nightshades experimentally? less GI issues, sleep improvement,alertness/focus improvement, increased fellings of "well being",better endurance/energy?
