There must be a catch. I've see a 100-lb plate-design weight set on several sites, including Amazon and Target, for less than $30! Other ones I've seen run well into the hundreds of dollars. What's the deal? Is it useless garbage, or will it stand up to some light use? As long as the weights stay on, aren't hard to switch, and the thing doesn't fall apart, I'm happy.

Craigslist is your friend in the search for barbells and the like cheap.

A 4 pound bar? Barbells are supposed to run 45 pounds. I wouldn't bother.
Check craigslist instead.

LOL! Duh, I didn't look at the shipping cost. That should have been a no-brainer - I don't know what I was thinking. I did look on Craigslist today, but I live in such a rural area that most listings are an hour or much further away from me.

A two piece straight bar? I sure wouldn't pick up a hundred pounds on a bar that can come apart like a curtain rod!

Chinese depleted uranium inside the weights?
Seriously, here in SW FL, there is a HUGE economic and political hot potato about Chinese drywall. Seems that a number of builder or subs used this during the boom, even if they were contractually forbidden to.
The vapors from still undetermined components in the gypsum are corroding wires, pipes.......and lungs.
