I just turned 40 and am hopefully only halfway to death (or even less than halfway). Given that three of my four grandparents made it to early 80s and my parents are still in great shape (and very active) in their early 70s, I've got genetics on my side, and plan to do all I can to make the "march to death" as healthy as possible. No way in hell do I think that at 40 I'm starting that march!
You will get there. I couldn't do 10 at Christmas, but I concentrated on pull-ups and chin-ups for 2 months and it worked wonders.
It's actually the SHBG that would be the culprit there, T generation can remain constant forever. The Free T is the key though, as you pointed out. I imagine that if people actually do remain physically active their SHBG levels won't rise (as fast at least) in later years and they can retain/build muscle mass all the way up until death. He might also be on TRT, which would be good at his age anyway.

People too weak to follow their own dreams will always try to discourage others.
Now, that's interesting. I didn't realize that, I just knew that the free numbers declined.
You do make a good point as far as the HRT being a good idea at his age...too bad more men don't give that serious consideration. I don't consider myself any less 'female' because I have to get some extra E; It's no different for a guy...but a WHOLE lot more helpful! (Well, all things considered. I mean, I like lead in the pencil as well as the next girl, KWIM?)
ANYway. Off to delve into the age-related causes of SHBG. I know that decreased free T3 will increase SHBG, but beyond that, I got nuthin'. I've been needing a good research topic-thanks!
