Is it just me or is Coconut oil not really all it's cracked up to be?

    Hi All,

I am curious to know if there are others out there that think Coconut oil is not all it's cracked up to be?

I really like the way it smells at room temperature, like delicious sweet things.......... like PBC Walnut Meal Brownies....

But once I start heating it for a vegetable saute, it smells, well, bleah...... I have tried a few different brands, and including a (price restrictive!) organic extra virgin one. And although I really want to LOVE it, I just don't. Lard, Butter (Ghee), Olive Oil, Tallow, these are all guaranteed to set the salivary glands into overload, but Coconut oil just.....well.....smells wrong once it starts heating up, and tastes fairly average as a saute oil IMHO.

So what say you all? Am I unique, or are there more of you out there?

    DB

PS I am planning to retry the friend coconut occasionally, in case I change my mind

    It's just you.

Coconut oil is the preferred oil for greasing nursing home staircases.

They don't put staircases in nursing homes.

Sharp retort! I don't know, I love it. Though I've had some smell odd if I heat it too much. However, if you're looking for someone to send your unused coco oil to...

I like it That's my preferred oil of choice. I think the coconut flavor does get milder once heated, but it's still there. You can use it on your skin and hair too.

I wasn't too keen on it when I first tried it, but the coconut oil kind of grows on you. I don't always use it for cooking, sometimes the coconut oil overpowers the flavours of what I'm looking for. But it is great with chocolate, nice on its own, and a great skin moisturizer. Good for sauteed veg, not so much for meat.

i have been using coconut oil for years, and it's honestly not really my favorite. i use it more for body care than i do cooking. it's nice to have around for the occasional vegan dish (my friends have a variety of diets, and if i can make a dish suit more diets without altering it too much, i try to). my goto fats are butter, evoo, bacon grease, coconut oil, and then lard (in that order).
