    Saurkraut and Pickles.

    Primal Fuel
I love saurkraut (sp)!!! I also like dill pickles. I need to know what the effect on my paleo diet eating these will have. I am sure the kosher "Hebrew National" saurkraut would not be bad but what about the pickles?

Kraut is probiotic and good for you and pickles depend of what kind you get. Some of them, like sweet pickles for example, have a lot of sugar and garbage added. I'm not really much of a pickle eater, but if I do want some I'll do some label reading before I buy them.

Ask Rivvin to tell you about the effect of a massive amount of sauerkraut and pork. (He's never living that down.)

Bubbies pickles are naturally fermented, just like real sauerkraut. Look for them in the deli case (they have to be refridgerated).

As long as they aren't sweet pickles are great. I leave some on my counter, or cukes in vingar, most days as a staybit.

The good, real kind of sauerkraut will often say "Barrel Cured" on the label. You may find it easier in the international section of your grocery store, or mixed in with the meat department coolers, completely separate from the regular 'kraut section.

And yeah, definitely read the ingredients labels. Many mainstream pickle varieties have a bit of HFCS in them.

If you get kraut and pickles that haven't had their cultures destroyed by heat, they're great for your digestion. I eat a Bubbies kosher dill pickle after my lunch as "dessert" because a.) it helps digestion, b.) the sour/garlicky taste kills any lingering sweets craving, and c.) it's delicious.

I second Bubbies. Naturally fermented with lactic acid. Delicious.

Just read the labels for pickles. It's very disturbing to see how many (almost all, actually) have a least a little added sugar...I mean, SERIOUSLY, it's a dill pickle, why would you put SUGAR in it?! Boo.
