I live in a rural area and there are VERY FEW lights and NO SHOULDER.. really?? Bike riders could ride a mile or 2 north to a 4 lane road WITH a bike path but noooooooo... drives me nuts!
Amen!
I have to be at work at 6am. and on the way, there's always some kid walking to school, wearing all black and crossing 4 lanes of traffic in the dark. Vegas has one of the worst stats for pedestrian deaths in the nation. Even worse, now the local law makers have decided anwhere there are 4 corners, it's considered an impromptu crosswalk.
Yeah, that's how you combat people running over jaywalkers - make jaywalking legal.

Um, going a mile or two out of your way on a bike takes a lot longer than in a car... that's kind of a lot to expect out of someone just trying to get somewhere. Bikes have just as much right to use the roads as cars do.
Using lights and reflectors is just basic safety, though.

Perhaps.. point is, if your not going to use basic bicycle safety precautions on a road with no shoulder and no lights, then use another road that is safer. Speed limit is 55mph, if you see them too late for lack of reflectors and such, a bad day is had by all. Personally, if bike riders are not going to adhere to the safety requirements to ride on the road, they have no business there.
And just consider the population explosion since he lived some 2200 years ago? I think we could safely amend Lao Tsu to say: Any given day you are surrounded by at least 100,000 idiots.

Every morning I walk my disabled son out to meet his school bus. We wait on the corner, on the sidewalk and inevitably there's some jerk kid... or even worse, a twenty-something with his dog on a friggin' leash... deciding that the nice, wide, clearly marked bike lane is for sissies. They're also riding north-bound on the south-bound side of the street and we almost always have to move or be plowed down! It seems to always be the same 3 or 4 idjits, too.
When it's his turn, DH has actually (after making sure DS is safely out of plowing trajectory) refused to move... and will yell at the jerk to get some "bike smarts". Go, Hubby!

The people that drive me nuts are the assholes that get off the cat bus on the strip. I've almost knocked off a few when they started crossing the street IN FRONT OF THE BUS and not caring to notice that we didn't have a red light.
And all tourists walking the strip are annoying when you're driving. They come here and forget how to use a sidewalk in mass.
