Hi, I live in the suburbs of Chicago and would like to take some classes on Nutrition. I have no idea where to start though. I'm not a big fan of the idea of going to a college and getting their nutrition knowledge. I think it would be geared toward the existing government food pyramid. I work full time, so the time involved would be a consideration also. Anybody have any ideas on a certificate program, or some schools that would offer a different view than a traditional college? Thanks a lot.

People say I am on a "crazy" diet. What is so crazy about eating veggies, fruits, seafood and organ meats? Just because I don't eat whole wheat and processed food doesn't make my diet "crazy". Maybe everyone else with a SAD are the "crazy" ones for putting that junk in their system.
primal/paleo is incredibly well supported by science...science done recently instead of sixty years ago. while nutrition classes at most schools may still follow the CW food pyramid, i doubt any school would have any problem with you presenting your own well-researched opinion.
Currently I'm in a nutrition and food science program, taking Intro to Nutrition. The first week my professor quoted both AHA and USDA guidelines and stated that has been well proven that Atkins "doesn't work" with no definition of what "work" would mean.
Its hugely frustrating. I have to sit on my hands and drink water to keep from talking.
The rest of my class has apparently never read anything on nutrition past Self magazine.
Getting a degree in nutrition will add clout to your arguments, but getting it will be frustrating, and you gotta give them THEIR answers to pass.
Being a primal in a nutrition class is like being a libertarian in an economics class. Head, meet desk.

Are you interested in taking classes for your own personal education or because you want to pursue a degree/career? Like you said, colleges will be teaching USDA guidelines. Alternative programs won't likely be any better, and could even be worse. Is it just me or are most naturopath types really down on animal foods?
The holistic nutrition college I go to preaches whole foods as a way to prevent disease and to help treat your ailments. They also teach all the fundamental nutrition concepts. Our college is a member of the National Association of Nutrition Practicioners and when I complete the program I can sit for the holistic board of nutrition exam. Before taking this route I was accepted into a conventional Master's of Nutrition Science program but I gave it up after looking at the curriculum and speaking to counselors on what I can do with the degree when I was done. But you are right that some alternative "nutrition colleges" may not be all that they are cracked up to be so it is good to do some research before jumping in head first with your wallet and time.

I want to do something with nutrition too. I think im going to major in biology though so I have a broad understanding of how sh!t works. Also you can probably do more with a biology degree...what do you guys think?
Just remember that if you are going to a Naturopathic doctor or clinic, make sure they came from a accredited University. There are only (I think) 4 Accredited naturopathic schools in the USA and 2 in Canada. If they didn't attend one of those schools, run the other way. Unless of course they actually got a O.D. or M.D. and are doing naturopathic medicine as a specialty. It really makes me nervous with the amount of people who claim to be naturopathic doctors because they took some online course etc. No, you actually have to attend a four year medical school.
