Hope you don't mind, that made me laugh. Mental illness is WEIRD and I think it's very common that people don't have a good grasp of how it works in a "what does it actually look like" kind of way. We know it's not a choice to be "crazy", but that doesn't make it easier to stop the "bad" thoughts. It's a difficult thing to explain & talk about, in more ways than one, as I think this post just exemplified.

    Best of luck.

Yes, I always mind when I make people laugh.

kidding. I am always happy to amuse even if it is unintentional.
somehow I manage to leave my intelligence and decorum at the door wherever I go. I doubt your journal will be an exception to that - not on the rug

I'll send my niece to you for observation. Even on antidepressants, she's still nutty as hell.

Well, that might help, though I have a 'depressed' mother and two sisters. Also my best buddy has PTSD. None of which I understand given that my sisters were raised by the exact same people I was, and my buddy went to the exact same duty stations as me, the exact deployment - same convoys etc.

Nameless summed up some of my confusion well in another thread -

Mental illness is basically encouraged & taught (this may be over-simplifying it, I am hesitant to post this, but I feel that it's true) so that it becomes ingrained behaviors & actions, instead of "chemical imbalances". Maybe the actions cause the imbalance.

I just find the whole thing confusing. Hence the need for more research/information.

In a lot if cases, its genetic. In my nieces defense, her mother (my sister) is more than likely bi-polar. My sister won't go through the trouble of being diagnosed. I know I've got issues with anxiety, but I don't want to be seen for it. I think after functioning all these years as I am, a little anxiety doesn't hurt now and again. It's way better, at least for me, than it was a kid. I would not sleep for weeks at a time just worrying about crap.

I am not trying to dismiss the idea of mental illnesses nor do I think anyone needs to defend them. I'm just pretty ignorant about them in general and wish to learn more. I do not want to give the impression that I think anyone is faking it or making it up. I just find it an interesting subject, just not one I know jack about.

So I did sexual harrassment training online, sat through a 3.5 hour sexual harrassment training session, and now I am required to do sexual harrassment training with my department. I am now so sick of sexual harrassment training that I want to go sexually harrass someone just to spite the powers that be.

If I was in your department I'd let you harass me just to get it out of your system...
But expect a gratuitous ass grab in return!

Maybe you'll be the guy to figure it all out. Would be nice to say, "I knew this guy when..."
