How I have multiplied my sperm count by more than 4 thanks to the primal lifestyle

    Shop Now
    Hi everyone,

This is my success on-going story as I haven't reached my goals yet but I am so excited that I'd like to share with you all.

A little background first. I have been trying to go Primal for a while now, ever since my friend gave me the PBP for my birthday. I tried and got some results fairly quickly, I even bought a pair of 5 fingers! But I failed miserably due to a lack of motivation and an obsession over Asian cuisine which includes rice in many forms.

So unfortunately, I've been hovering at 25% body fat at 176cm for around 80kg for about 3 years now. I am 27yo.

I needed real motivation, the kind that is really life changing.

My wife and I decided to have a child for many reasons including the fact that a pregnancy could cure her life-threatening disease. After failing for over a year, we decided to get checked and it turns out that I have a very small sperm count of less than 1 million/mL (the WHO standard is 15 million/mL minimum to be considered fertile). The cause is that I have a genetic issue called a Robertsonian Translocation.

Lucky for us, we have access to In Vitro Fertilisation which offers a glimpse of hope for our future. As you may or may not know, it is a very expensive procedure on top of being very tiring and painful for my wife, both physically and mentally. On average, people go through 3 cycles of IVF before having a successful pregnancy.

After some research, my wife discovered that it may be possible for me to reverse my fertility issue within 3 months following a set of rules. Nothing to lose, I thought it would be an excellent opportunity to go primal (partially, more on that below) as I know that our modern environment can play a major part in infertility problems and that the primal lifestyle is an escape from it.

    Here are the rules:
    - Healthy and balanced diet (that's where I follow the nutrition part of the primal lifestyle)
    - Plenty of sleep (here again)
    - Keep my cell phone away from my jewels (it never sits in my pocket anymore)
    - No alcohol
    - No coffee
    - No dipping myself in water (swimming pool, ocean, hot bath, etc)
    - No running (no sprinting...)
    - Limited walking (not very primal)
    - Non restrictive underpants
    - 2 to 3 days between sexual activities

I've basically started following this set of rules and the primal diet mid December 2010. I have taken several sperm tests between August and December 2010 and they all came back at below 1 million/mL.

    Here are the results:

    Sunday 19th Dec 2010:
    Sperm count: < 1 million/mL
    Weight: 86.4Kg
    Body fat: 27.9%

    Thursday 6th Jan 2011:
    Sperm count: 2.5 million/mL
    Weight: 82.8Kg
    Body fat: 26.7%

    Saturday 12th February 2011:
    Sperm count: 4.6 million/mL
    Weight: 80Kg
    Body fat: 20.25%

How amazing! My goal is to achieve 15 million/mL or as close as possible to that figure in order to increase our chances to conceive naturally!

Also, it is worth mentioning that I haven't exercised at all and I work in an office all day long. I simply do not eat any bad carbs 6 days a week according to the primal blue print. We allow ourselves one cheat day per week (Saturdays) where we go absolutely all out. Well, not so much anymore because we are now having trouble digesting refined carbs and other wheat or rice based products.

If there is sufficient interest, I will keep updating my progress as I feel that this is truly changing our lives.

This post also leads me to this question in regards to work out as I would like to start doing some exercise in order to boost my testosterone levels.

Start walking and sprinting. I am certain these activities will not negatively affect your count. Bathing/swimming in cool water will likely not hurt either.

There's a whole chapter in The 4 Hour Body on how he upped his count as well...the cell phone had a huge impact!

No more cell phone in the pocket for me!

We got our advices from a specialist and so far so good. As much as I would love to believe I can sprint and swim, I can't really afford to test the theory. We are racing against the clock unfortunately

The only constant meals are my breakfasts and the frequency of my cheat days.

Breakfast: usually 2 or 3 organic eggs, 3 slices of short cut bacon, one sausage (frankfurt type) and some cooked spinach. I used to eat lentils or beans instead of spinach (inspired from the 4-H body) but I don't feel any difference in hunger throughout the day but notice more weight loss from eating spinach.

I also have 2 tablets of fish oil along with one tablet of multivitamins for men and one tablet of menevit (supplements to help improve sperm count and quality).

Lunch and dinner are recipes taken from the Primal Cook Book, from this website or from the 4H-Body cook book, so it varies every day.

I also avoid fruits 6 days a week.

On my cheat day I go all out from the time I get up to the time I go to sleep. Chocolate candies, bread, rice, you name it. It consistently results in weigh gain over the next 2 following days (+1Kg) and go back to my pre-cheat day weight by cheat day + 3 or 4. Rest of the week is weight loss.

I've read his book and yes, this chapter got us started. My phone is now either in my hand, in my chest pocket, or in my cargo pants/shorts pocket if I'm wearing one. Otherwise it sits on my desk or on my car mount. It wasn't so hard to do especially considering I am a really heavy cellphone user.

I don't wish to go into details to respect our privacy but basically her hormonal system is all over the place which has devastating effects on her body. The disease itself is rare and not very well known in the western world and even though we have seen many specialists they have not been able to come up with a suitable cure. The treatment she is under is experimental with strong side effects and we don't know if it will work. So far the results are very average. Our doctors have recommended that she gets pregnant because pregnancy activates mechanisms that reboot the hormonal system which would have extremely positive effects on her health and possibly cure her.

In regards to using a donor, it is her wish to not want to have another man's baby.

If you want to help boost your count you could have your wife smell like a different man each day of the week, your body's competitiveness will kick in...
