    Question Fruity Fruits

    Primal Fuel
Ok people... I need a no-nonsense verdict on fruit.

I typically eat 2-3 servings of fruit per day. Maybe a banana, some blueberries and a handful of cherries, spread out throughout the day. This is the same amount I ate before going Primal, too. I'm not trying to lose weight, but I hope that my body fat will decrease and muscle increase as I move through my primal journey.

Fruit is light, sweet, and refreshing! I enjoy it but I'm confused about its place in the Primal lifestyle... does it vary per person?

In my opinion it is individual but I'm a fruit person.

I also really like fruit. I probably eat more fruit than is recommended for the typical primal diet, but I'm also not trying to lose weight. Plus, I'm young, active, and it's better than candy!

The thing about fruit is that it is high in sugar, so it can possibly inhibit weight loss efforts. I don't think there's anything wrong with 3 servings if you're not trying to lose weight.

I eat 2-3 servings per day as well. I do not need to lose any weight though and I am pretty active. If you stick to blueberries/strawberries you won't have as big of an insulin response as other fruits. I typically eat fruits after intense exercise. I think since you said your weight levels are fine I wouldn't worry too much about your current level of fruit consumption. If you want to increase muscle and lose fat then I would recommend high intensity exercises and doing a lot of resistance/weight bearing workouts a few times a week.

People say I am on a "crazy" diet. What is so crazy about eating veggies, fruits, seafood and organ meats? Just because I don't eat whole wheat and processed food doesn't make my diet "crazy". Maybe everyone else with a SAD are the "crazy" ones for putting that junk in their system.

3 servings of fruit is quite a bit of sugar, but just like with salt, balsamic vinegar, wine, dairy...if it's the worst thing you're eating, you're still doing better than the vast majority of people.

That said, I feel 3 servings of tubers (or 2 tuber 1 fruit) would be better. As long as you're eating that many carbs, starch is inarguably superior to sugar. It can also help ramp up your metabolism, I've certainly experienced more energy and better sleep since making the switch.

Dr. Kurt Harris of PaNu thinks that more than 15g a day of fructose is too much. Apples can range from 6-18 g of fructose.

    Read the section on fructose.

To lose body fat, you have to burn it; all controlled by hormones. To build muscle, you have to stimulate your body to do so.

Thanks for the responses so far. js290 that was a really helpful article, I finally understand the difference between glucose and fructose! I'll definitely be more mindful of my fruit consumption, but I also see that it's not necessary for a person of good health and weight to eliminate fruit from their diets.

I only eat fruit after a fast or very intense workout. That way, liver glycogen is depleted and fructose goes toward replenishing that, not triglycerides and all that nasty stuff.
