Tell them why your fasting....
and take the water
So I know that if you consume anything with calories, you end the fast. I am trying to do a 24 hour fast today, for religious reasons, but just had a realization. We are offered bread & water as part of our "communion" (sacrament) at church, and I'm going to get a lot of strange looks if I pass, especially since I hold an office in the Presidency over the children.
Moral dilemma!
1) it's bread (grain, anti Primal)
2) but it's the sacrament
Ah, help!

Well everyone in the church is fasting today (unless they are physically unable to), but taking the sacrament is still expected. You're not supposed to have one without the other. It's kind of a no-no.
EDIT: Just remembered I have a friend at church who can't have gluten. I will ask her how she handles the sacrament.

How big is sacrament? - its bread but normally its not much - If your fasting with everyone and everyone is taking it......
then again its amazing how far a shake of the head will go - I am captain oblivious though and for all I know everyone is looking down on me

Usually it's a piece of bread about the size of one's thumbnail. Same for the water.

I'm guessing this would be a good situation for the 20%.
Feeling uncomfortable about not taking sacrament OR feeling uncomfortable about eating grain? Think about which one worries you the most and decide from there.
Another tip might be to just stop worrying about it and let the stress go. It's only a tiny bit of bread (thumbnail, wow) it's not going to do damage in such small quantities and so infrequently.![]()

Pay attention to everyone else - I know I'm not the only one that gives a slight shake of the head and keeps his mouth closed.
but its really not much - If you think its the right thing to do, do it and don't worry - its not enough to spike your insulin or cause bloating and your fasting for religious reasons and everyone else is taking it then your still following the rules of that fast.

I think I will skip it this week so I can honestly tell myself I completed a 24 hour fast, and then take it the other 3 Sundays. Thank you!

There is a since of accomplishment after completing a day long fast - I'm below my weight loss goal and still do a day every week - I do it on my first day back to work so I can sleep in and not make breakfast or lunch. Weird talking about fasting and getting sent this on Facebook:

Still hanging in there at 22 of 24 hours. It's gonna get tough now that we've got dinner in the oven and the house is gonna be smelling of deliciousness. My stomach started growling toward the end of church. Very cool article, btw, Rud
"At the end of a 24-hour fast, you will have a slightly elevated metabolic rate due to increased adrenaline levels."
That might explain why I feel kinda flighty/panic-attacky. Adrenaline. That's new.
