    Longer Fasts

    Shop Now
In my religion, we are encouraged to fast on the first Sunday of each month. In the past, I have used the excuse that I couldn't fast b/c I was diabetic, but now that I'm on PB & I do IF almost daily, I think I'm ready for a good, solid fast.
So I was wondering if anyone could offer me some tips for peacefully surviving a 24 hour fast? The longest I've gone is 18 hours. The last few days I've been eating a lot & still feel like I could gnaw my freaking arm off (today is one of those days). So I'm a little worried about tomorrow, but if you have any tips on what I could do today to not feel like my arm is a viable food source tomorrow, that would be great!

    P.S. Today I'm at 8% carb, 50% fat, and 42% protein

I can easily go 24 hour between meals. I am not sure what tips I can give you as it seems that everyone is different with regards to fasting ability. I find the easiest thing to do is just keep busy. My first fast was my regularly planned weekly 24 hour fast and my second one was done accidentally because I photographed an all day wedding and didn't have time to eat. Funny thing is that I wasn't hungry nor did I go into some hypoglycemic, fainting fit (as CW might suggest I would) despite running all over the place photographing. I believe that since I don't rely on immediate carbohydrate consumption (I am primarily a carnivore) for my energy I am able to carrying on very well using the stable energy that body fat provides.

Water - I have been fasting every Saturday for about 6 months now(from dinner Friday till breakfast Sunday)
I will drink 10-16 oz upon waking and whenever I feel a hunger pang and it works.

Good idea. Hard to feel hungry when one's belly is full of fluid. I am used to drinking a good amount of water in a day.

When I fast for religious reasons, rather than trying to avoid hunger feelings I use them to remind me to pray.

Water and will power. I've fasted for days for similar reasons. One day is usually easy to accomplish in my opinion if you are focused. Prayer helps and so does a ton of water. If you're fasting more than one day you typically experience nausea, sweeting and elevated heart rate and loss of energy on Day Two or Three if you are inexperienced. Water, water and more water. Lots of pray and focus. I tend to think of it as cleansing the flesh.

Maybe try to keep yourself busy, there's nothing worse than sitting down being hungry all day

Dr. Bork Bork, Are you type I or type II?

I would hesitate to give advice on fasting to a type I diabetic. However, Loads of fat the night before fasting always works for me. Then keep busy as was said earlier.

I am T2, but have been working really hard to get off of my meds. I did away with insulin this past fall, next visit I am hoping to get off of glucophage! Then we'll work on weaning off of thyroid meds. I believe the body can heal itself. I believe I am an excellent example of this theory.

Trying to think what I can do to stay busy on a Sunday. Maybe go for a walk before church? Then nap after. That should take care of most of the day I think.
