How to make myself want to workout more???

Ah, okay so I just came to the realization that I am probably the laziest butt in the whole world because I can only motivate myself to workout when it's warm and sunny outside, otherwise, I have very little motivation to exercise.... Now, here's the worst part: I live in southern California!!!!!! How lazy and spoiled can I get??? Last week the weather was perfect, 70s and sunny and I did all my workouts, went swimming everyday, and did tons of walking outside.... then, this week it dropped down to 60s and partly cloudy, and I have no motivation whatsoever to do my workouts.... what is wrong with me, right??? the weather is still relatively great, but all I want to do is be a couch potato or do homework in the library.... I have been taking Vitamin D supplements, but they don't help my motivation to work out.... is this some sort of a seasonal affective thing??... Does anyone have any tips for motivating oneself to get out more often?

Screw motivation. Seriously...do you motivate yourself to brush your teeth? Do you motivate yourself to do other things that may not be fun but just have to be done? There is a point that Mark makes about doing what you feel like doing and missing the occasional workout is no big deal, but you arent there yet. For now, write the workout, walk, whatever in your scheduler in pen.

OK probably your schedule is electronic, I may be the last of the luddites. Whatever. Put it in the same way you would put in a doctor's appointment or a customer meeting and just do it. Make it a walk if swimming sounds like too much effort. Walk for 15 minutes. Once you get past 15 minutes 90% of the time you will probably want to keep going.

Can you walk any of your errands? My friend never does any conventional exercise, but she walks to the grocery store. Which means she has to go almost every day because she only gets what fits in her backpack to take home. It's perfect because it is downhill to the store, and uphill home carrying the full backpack. Some times she wears it and hikes up. Sometimes she takes out smaller items and walks home carrying them doing bicep curls or overhead presses.

MTA: Or if you really need that kick in the butt...tell yourself you have to either go out and move or scrub the toilet or someother chore you detest
MTA: because it is rare I dont have more to say

Find something you like doing. You couldn't get me to do 20 minutes in the treadmill even if Jessica Alba was promised to me as a reward, but I'd climb any rope in sight because that shit is FUN! the fact that it works out my upper body like nothing else is just an awesome and welcomed side effect. The point here is, find what you like, or a skill you want to learn, or if all that fails: picture your ideal physique, and train like those people do.

If you want to look like a soccer player, start playing some soccer, go to some websites and find out how they structure their training (they do more than just run of course, I played soccer for many years and there's a good deal of strength training involved)

I want to look like a gymnast, so guess what I'm doing? I don't have access to all their equipment but I'm doing what I can with what's at my disposal, working on different skills. Eventually I want to get gymnastic rings and really take my training to new heights. The best part of it all is that I really enjoy what I'm doing so it never feels like a chore or a bother to work out.

    How I do it:

    Play the theme from Rocky.
Watch triathlon footage (or whatever floats your boat) on YouTube.

    Then I will unpark it.

Invest in a Wii or Kinect & some fitness games. I especially like Biggest Loser Challenge (the new one for 2011). My wii has been my go-to guy when weather sucks or I just want to stay home. You work up a sweat, but it's light exercise and it's FUN! I personally don't feel it's chronic cardio at all.

It's more important to be active and have fun than it is to exercise or workout. Where's the fun in workout? I only see the word work. Blech. Who in their right mind wants to do that? If you're not enjoying it, find something else to stoke your fitness fire

This is really good advice! I'll give this some thought, though I know that what I want to do and what I want to look like are pretty much the same. (Bellydancer, Martial Artist, Gymnast/Acrobat, Pole Dancer- Ok, I don't want to BE a pole dancer, I just want to look like one! )

So sign up for a pole dancing class...they are all over the place now and are supposed to be a killer workout. Talk about lifting your own bodyweight and throwing it around

I don't drive, and it was a PITA to work around schedules when I took a bellydancing class. Still, I may be able to talk a friend into taking one with me, and then we could carpool. I'm not taking a class til I'm stronger though, I wouldn't get much out of it right now.
