    Question Blood Glucose testing question

    I have a home glucose test meter, and I want to do some personal monitoring, but I am not sure how long after eating blood sugar starts to rise. When would be the best time to test to see my glucose response after a snack or meal? Anyone have experience with this?

    The standard testing schedule is: two hours after you *start* eating, your BG should be 120 or below. I get annoyed if mine is over 100 anymore, though.
    Primal eating in a nutshell: If you are hungry, eat Primal food until you are satisfied (not stuffed). Then stop. Wait until you're hungry again. Repeat.

    Thanks Griff. So to clarify... blood sugar levels go up for two hours after eating? I guess i somehow assumed insulin would kick in and pull it back down by then. Hmmm. Maybe I need to do some personal experimenting. Just trying to get some guidance so I don't just waste a bunch of test strips.

    No, the point is to make sure they go back DOWN two hours after you start eating. It's important to note this: for most people "two hours after eating" means after they stop eating. That's NOT when you test. Test two hours after you START to eat.

    Blood sugar will always go up a little bit in response to food; that's normal. The issue is whether it goes back down to normal in a timely fashion or not.

    Thank you for clarifying this. I was one who misunderstood and timed it after I stopped. Good to know.
    Started PB late 2008, lost 50 lbs by late 2009. Have been plateaued, but that thing may just be biting the dust: more on that later.

    There is lots of good information at The Heart Scan Blog. Below is an example. I'm going to start this soon and do it for awhile just to satisfy my own curiosity.

    So I taught Jack how to check his blood sugars using a fingerstick device, what I call the most important weight loss tool available. I asked Jack to check his pre-meal blood glucose and his one-hour after-meal blood glucose and not allow the after-meal blood glucose to rise any higher than the pre-meal. For example, if blood glucose pre-meal was 115 mg/dl, after-meal blood glucose should be no higher than 115 mg/dl.

    If any food or combination of foods increase blood glucose more than the pre-meal value, then eliminate the culprit food or reduce the portion size. For example, if dinner consists of baked salmon, asparagus, and mashed potatoes, and pre-meal blood glucose is 115 mg/dl, post-meal 155 mg/dl, reduce or eliminate the mashed potatoes. If slow-cooked, stone ground oatmeal causes blood glucose to increase from 115 mg/dl to 185 mg/dl (a typical response to oatmeal), then eliminate it.

    ah ok - that first link "What is a Normal Blood Sugar" has a very helpful graph that shows blood sugar peaks at about 45 minutes after starting a meal. This was what I wanted to know. Thank you marcadav.

    Right, I do understand the normal response to a meal and the markers for diabetes. I am not diabetic nor do I suspect it. I just want to test myself and see how I react to certain foods for which I have not been able to find satisfactory GI info about. Thanks for your help Griff.
