I had a food allergy panel ordered by a doctor. This test screened for IgG and IgE reactions. IgE reactions are the type that constrict your throat and can be dangerous. IgG reactions are less acute and more systemic -- indigestion, sinus congestion, aches and pains. I already knew I had IgE reactions to lobster, crab, and shrimp, but didn't know about IgG

    The culprits?

    Wheat

    Soy

    Milk and milk products

    Cane sugar and cane juice

    No reaction at all to:

Beef, chicken, turkey, lamb, and eggs, all fruits(except cranberry) and vegetables.

    Wow.

Well, now I have even more motivation to go primal!

I was bummed out to find that commercial coconut milk is sweetened with cane juice, though. Beet sugar is ok. If I don't go primal, I'll have to learn to bake with buckwheat and beet sugar! Will probably give up on that and stay primal.

That is VERY interesting! Did your regular Dr. order the tests or did you go to a specialist?

Why would there be cane sugar in coconut?

I went to a Naturopathic Doctor, a graduate of Bastyr University. In Washington state, NDs have the same standing as family practice/primary care MDs.

There's cane juice in the coconut milk by So Delicious, which I guess is processed to taste more like regular milk. http://www.turtlemountain.com/products/Coconut_Bev_Plain.html

Apparently there is an unsweetened version that I didn't see at the store. I'll have to look for it.

What brand of coconut milk do you use?

I've noticed a lot of common allergies are to food that's not exactly healthy anyway. I have a friend who's allergic to wheat and soy. Two of the worst foods you can put in your body, and she's forced not to eat them (unfortunately by horrible allergic reactions!). It means avoiding a lot processed food because it tends to often contain wheat and soy. She's also severely allergic to bananas though...

Other common allergies are peanuts and dairy: both things that aren't nutrionally optimal.

I've certainly never heard of anyone being allergic to good healthy foods like meat and fat!

True immune-based allergies are to proteins. I had a friend in high school who was allergic to beef, a friend in college who was allergic to chicken and fish, and there are plenty of us who have shellfish allergies.

Then there are reactions classified as sensitivities and intolerances, which do not involve a reaction by the immune system, so they will not show up on an IgG or IgE screening, but you sure know if you're lactose-intolerant (as does everyone around you).

One of my friends goes to a Naturopath regularly, after Allopathy and strong medications wreaked havoc on her. She's doing much better now and the diet recommended by her Naturopath is low-carb and very Primal-like. She's now cured of all her previous disorders that the allopath medications only suppressed with some bad side-effects, but never cured. And sadly, it's the naturopaths who are called quacks by the mainstream.

adipocyte, dump the So Delicious brand. They claim to be urbo-healthy but always end up adding stuff that doesn't need to be in any of the foods they sell.
