I could only eat dates at an oasis in the desert after a long camel trek.

I only buy them 5 or six at a time because I love them so much. I like cutting them in half and then pressing on shredded coconut and a pecan. They are out of this world but I really have to watch it with these as they do have a lot of sugar. I totally get where you are coming from with the overload.

I eat dark chocolate solely sweetened with xylitol. I tolerate xylitol very well and its properties are a mirror-image of refined sugar's negative effects. Yes, it is not primal, it is a processed item but heck, it is a nice treat and not addictive at all (can be days without thinking about chocolate, unlike other folks around here ). Dates ? yeah, maybe once in a while but I am not super fond of them and taste way too sweet.

Dates have very high GI. If I ate a big date, it would probably trigger a sugar binge. I do eat a piece or two 85-95% chocolate every day and I would say 1-3 grams of refined sugar in the superdark chocolate are much better than 50 g of "natural sugar" from dates. Chemically it is still glucose/fructose, no matter where it comes from.
