i can't do a negative as i don't have the strength to hold me up. can raise myself maybe half an inch? an inch from a dead hang.

I'm in! Sorry to be late to the game... Not only can I not do an unassisted pull up, but I think the last time I *was* able to do them was in middle school.
This is the year to change that.

So the pull-up bar is here and installed. Even with the resistance bands I can do nothing but hang there. It feels like I will be able to do a chin-up before I can do a pull-up. Is this common?
Progress update: getting closer to a complete pullup (dead hang to chin over bar). I"m using one leg straight out on an exercise ball to minimize the assistance from my legs. I'm using a pullup bar with two bars that project perpendicular from the wall - finding this neutral hand position the easiest. Wish I had less bodyweight to work against!
yes, and start with hanging shrugs (that is, hang from the bar and pull your shoulders down your back, then slowly lower yourself down, then pull the shoulders down the back again, etc) and negatives (use a chair, bench, or step ladder to get up). you'll get there soon, honest!
So I finally had my area of the gym to myself to try some equipment I hadn't before, including the pullup apparatus. Needless to say, I can't do a chinup LOL. I did the above mentioned 'shrugs' though, and felt that at least I accomplished something. :P
