    Headaches

    So, I guess this is what they call the "low carb flu," but I am two weeks in and just now getting awful dull headaches. They are making me very stabby. I switched from drinking 1 fruit juice smoothie per day the first week to a blueberry and coconut milk smoothie the past few days (comes to maybe 30 carbs). That's when I noticed the headaches kick in. I have been keeping the carbs under 50grams. Should I ditch the daily smoothie until the headaches go away? Please help! I was feeling so happy, now I'm very snappish!

    Headache has disappeared. I didn't take my vitamin supplement yesterday and it went away. Or it could have something to do with me halving my blueberry intake. Oh, I hope it was the supplement, for I dearly love my blueberries.

    The only way to really get rid of the low-carb flu is to cut your carbs down to as close to zero as possible until it goes away. This makes the flu more intense, but makes it shorter. I recommend this route if you're still having headaches and other symptoms two weeks in.

    Sometimes the only way to kick the carb habit is to go cold turkey for a while.
    Primal eating in a nutshell: If you are hungry, eat Primal food until you are satisfied (not stuffed). Then stop. Wait until you're hungry again. Repeat.

    Because they're still fairly high-carb, and if you're trying to lose weight or improve insulin resistance or blood sugar problems, they're not the best choice. According to your journal, you got into this primarily to burn away belly fat. Taking in that many carbs at once, no matter where they're from, is not going to help with that goal.

    I see what your saying Griff, I only used half a cup of blueberries and keep my carbs under 30 grams per day- is that too high to make carb flu go away? Maybe I should specify in my blog that losing belly fat, although something I want to do, isn't the main reason I wanted to go primal. I've been looking at Primal for the past six months, since I stopped eating gluten, and was impressed with how it seemed to help people who had some of my problems: hypoglycemia, extreme fatigue/memory problems, tendonitis, and anxiety disorder. Since I am hoping to start my university teaching career next fall, I wanted to get these things in check! I've read about your success with your diabetes, and I hope I can convince my diabetic grandparents to turn things around, too.

    The main issue, as I see it, is that right now you are starting your day with a smoothie that is mostly carbs. That primes your body for fat storage rather than fat burning throughout the day, and prolongs the carb flu (which is really carb withdrawal; you're kicking a habit). Having sugary carby things is counterproductive, and even berries do a number on my blood sugars, so I have to be *really* careful about them. When you blend them into a smoothie, you're guaranteeing that you're getting more carbs, because you're breaking down the indigestible fiber, so it will cause a spike. And if you're a hypoglycemic - bad juju. Like I said, ditch the smoothies.

    All that + it's dessert, stop having dessert for breakfast.
