    Lunch - a 'new' meal

I have been re-reading my set of Poldark books by Winston Graham, set in cornwall in the 1780s to 1810s.

I was surprised to read in one set in 1810 that 'luncheon' was a new meal (this was in the upper class level of society, a great house).

"With the custom of dinner growing ever later and supper easing to be important, a new meal called luncheon had been introduced at about one, to bridge the gap between breakfast and the formal meal of the day at six thirty."

And it also mentions, in an earlier book, that they kept their teeth white by rubbing them every morning with a 'mallow root'. This was on the cornish north coast near the sea, I have no idea what type of 'mallow, he'd be referring to.

That'd be marshmallow! The actual plant marshmallow, which isn't even used to make marshmallows anymore. It was also used to treat mouth sores and some skin issues.

Yeah, this is very cool to know. Ever since I started the PB, lunch has seemed unnecessary and a bit strange.

Also referred to by Jane Austen in one of her novels as "nuncheon" - I think it is "Persuasion".
