    Too many or too few?

    Primal Fuel
I'm attempting to get rid of these last 15-20 pounds and so I'm tracking carbs and calories pretty closely. My daily calories for a 2 pound/week weight-loss is 1920. When exercising I wear a heart rate monitor that gives me calories burned. Knowing that those things are usually inaccurate, I add back to my daily calories about 80% of what the HRM says I burned. For example, yesterday I added back 400 calories (sprint workout) for a total daily calorie budget of 2320. Other days the number is closer to 2100-2200 cals.

Now...onto the question. I usually don't eat anywhere near that amount. Some days I am hovering around 1000 calories, others I get up to 1800. My carbs usually fall in the 40-80 gram/day range. Am I sabotaging my weight loss by not eating enough? Should I not worry about it and let hunger be my guide? I do know that I have not been helping myself too much by drinking more than usual (my wife makes a mean vodka/soda and I love wine).

I would say you need to eat more. Not eating enough can be as big a factor in no weight loss as eating too much.

Lojasmo- can you tell me why you disagree? Just curious.

1000 calories is not enough. Especially for a man.

Using my bodymedia fit this week here is what I am seeing. On the two days that I had a bigger calorie deficit than normal (just over 1000) I had gained weight the next day. On all the other days when my deficit was between 400-700 I lost weight. Also when I was tracking just calories without an accurate knowledge of calories burned on the days that were low calories (1000-1300) I never lost weight.

Our bodies go into starvation mode when they don't get enough and hold onto those calories for dear life.

    .
Google Christian bale and the machinist. He lost 65 pounds eating an apple and a can of tuna a day.

Christian Bale in the machinist is probably not the lean physique anyone is after.
