    Dr. G's Nightshade-Free Curry Powder:

    Equal parts of turmeric powder, ground coriander seed, and ground cumin.

    Combine in an air-tight jar and shake to mix. Other addition options (add less of these!) include mustard powder, ginger powder, garlic powder, and fresh ground black pepper.
    Sounds like a lot of turmeric to me...

    I'm on the search for nightshade (and dairy) free curries, along with any other Indian and Thai recipes (any recs appreciated!!)

    Nightshade and SUGAR* free ketchup recipe (there is a pasta sauce recipe at the bottom as well ): http://www.craigsams.com/pages/nomato.html
    Nomato Ketchup recipe

    435g Carrot puree (boil carrots and puree very fine)
    30g lemon juice
    200g Apple conc 70 (or 130g sugar and an extra 50ml water)
    25g Water
    20 g Beetroot juice (or to get the shade of red you're after)
    15g salt
    7g onion powder (optional)
    2g Ketchup spice



    KETCHUP SPICE MIX

    18g cinnamon
    17g garlic powder
    5g kelp powder (optional)
    4g ground nutmeg
    3g white pepper
    3g clove powder

    Or, roughly

    2 tsp cinnamon
    2 tsp garlic powder
    1/2 tsp nutmeg
    1/2 tsp white pepper
    1/2 tsp clove powder

    For Baked Beans: Use precooked tinned haricot beans (from any health food store) and add ready made ketchup. Bake in the oven for 30 minutes at 150
    For Pasta Sauce: Take the basic mix, without the ketchup spice and onion powder. Saute onions and garlic and vegetables of your choice and cover in the basic puree mixture and add herbs and seasoning to taste

    A vegetarian bouillon powder (Marigold brand or Kallo) will enhance the flavour
    Will share when/if I try it out!


    ETA: Just realized the 'apple concentrate' is in there--so its not sugar free...May still be a good base for ketchup or other sauce though even w/out the sugar...

    Here is a sloppy joe recipe from the forums that might be easily made nightshade free.

    SLOPPY JOE STUFFED PEPPERS
    1 pound ground beef
    1 ounce onion, chopped, about 2 tablespoons
    1 stalk celery, chopped
    1 carrot, chopped
    1 clove garlic, minced
    ***1/2 cup tomato sauce (I used 1/2 cup tomato paste plus 1/4+ cup water--puree sauteed onions, carrots, garlic, and celery w/ this--texture issues ds)
    1 1/2 teaspoons white vinegar
    1 1/2 teaspoons coconut aminos
    1/2 teaspoon mustard
    1/2 teaspoon salt
    1/8 teaspoon pepper


    ***I'm thinking to use a cooked, mashed sweet potato blended w/ a little broth to replace the tomato sauce, maybe with a little lemon juice added for acidity. I'll share if I make this--thinking to do it with ground venison (which I got for free from my sister-in-law and her hunting husband--YAY!) tonight.

    FairyRae - thanks for all the great links and recipes! I have been having some twinges of pain in my foot and knees this week and reading some of these may have helped me identify a few places I could still tighten up my diet.

    Have you tried any of the recipes yet?

    It was a sad day when my nightshade challenges left no doubt that I can't tolerate any of them...migraine headache for 3 days plus a violent return to knee pain. Argh. However...I've learned to love whole spices such as mustard seeds, coriander and cumin and I use a lot of rosemary and thyme. If you react to nightshades after taking them out of your diet, you may want to challenge egg whites as well. I keep trying to add them back in thinking it might have been something else. Nope.
