This link adds a whole new dimension to the powers of Vitamin D. Most surprising, it is not a vitamin at all. It is a required HORMONE.

Why are Colds & Flu always in the winter?
    WONDER NO MORE.
Dr. Miller explains that this is when our Vitamin D blood levels drop well below deficient from a lack of sunlight !
Taking vitamin D3 supplements to maintain our blood level at 60 to 70 ng/ml really does prevent the flu and colds.
5,000 to 10,000 IU daily is recommended to achieve this blood level.

Amazingly, Vitamin D prevents MANY forms of cancers
    * All about Vitamin D, history & proven illnesses it cures

Dr. Miller also discusses WHY Vitamin D prevents or greatly reduces the risk of:
    * Rickets ( deformed bones ) in children, osteoporosis, hunched over spine
    * influenza and tuberculosis
    * multiple sclerosis (MS), Type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and inflammatory bowel disease
    * cardiovascular disease + high blood pressure
    * prevents a whole host of cancers – colon, breast, lung, pancreatic, ovarian, and prostate
    * proven by a recent double blind study to prevent breast cancers

If everyone in the USA took an adequate amount of Vitamin D, just imagine how many doctors & hospitals would go out of business!

Thanks Grizz, been looking to get 5,000 IU gelcaps. Any reason why you recommend those two?

    iniquity,
Yes, these 2 suppliers have good prices and have been reliable, and recommended by others on this board.
    * My favorite Vitamin Shops for 5,000 IU D3 Gelcaps:
    http://www.drugstore.com/products/pr...367&aid=332800
    http://www.swansonvitamins.com/NWF182/ItemDetail

I like drugstore.com because they have sale prices on orders > $40, where I can frequently get free shipping and $off on the order, too.
But Swanson has better prices, hard to beat. If drugstore.com has no sale prices, then I go with Swanson. Also it is impossible to find 5,000 IU gelcaps anywhere near our house. Internet orders are the only choice for us. Everyone carries the 1,000 IU capsules and that is NFG.

If you find better deals anywhere else, please let us know ;--))

When I order supplements, I always order enough to last > 1 year years to get all the discounts. I typically order 10 bottles at a time because I know I will use them, and I give them out to family members.

I have a friend who I have been gently mentioning PB to, with no success. In the past, her colds have been very harsh and lasted for weeks. Recently, she felt she clearly was coming down with one. In desperation, she agreed to take lots of D. The cold was mild and lasted a few days.

My son had suffered a miserable cold for about 3 weeks. Despite normally rolling his eyes at PB, he agreed to take a mega dose of D. The cold cleared up quickly.

    Anecdotal, I know. Maybe it wasn't the D. But . . . .

i had been taking my vitamin D more seriously, taking at least 5,000 IU per day. I missed a few days, and now my sniffles have turned into a full-on head cold with body aches. ugh. needless to say, i'm taking D again.

    Saoirse,
A cold & sniffles are nothing compared to your immune system being damaged from a Vitamin D deficiency. I suggest that you get your Vitamin D Blood test and adjust your dosage to optimum 60 to 70 ng/ml. Your entire immune system is dependent of this VITAL supplement. IMO, 5,000 IU is just not enough unless you get frequent sun exposure with NO sunscreen.

WHY NOT? Vitamin D has been proven to prevent breast cancers, colds & flu. And with all the other diseases linked to Vitamin D Deficiency, an at home blood test is certainly worth it.

I briefly read (on a random site) that Vitamin D prevents the proliferation of cells which can lead to cancer. That's the super mundane explanation but it's good enough for me.

I haven't been sick since I started primal and my D average per week is under 30,000IU but kicking it up now that winter is coming up. I'd say I averaged abotu 20,000iu/week whenever I remembered to take it. I'm buying some for the fam, my girlfriend's fam too.
