Rowing Machine - Cardio, Muscle, or both?

Just curious as to what all of you think about the rowing machine at the gym? Is it considered more of a cardio or muscle workout? Both? Also, what frequency would you utilize such a device? I just did 44 minutes (10k m) and I'm tuckered out.

How can it be chronic cardio if heart rate is kept in check (no more than 75% of max)?

I've done intervals on them. The Concept2 Rowers at my gym have computers that you can program custom intervals (30s sprint/1:30 rest or whatever). Great substitute for regular running sprints if you can't do them for some reason (although I have gone back to regular sprints and like them a lot).

I love it for doing sprints/interval -- 1 X per week no more than 10 min TOTAL. Definitely not for my muscle workout! Read the downloadable PB fitness plan for more on sprints...

Use that rower in a sprint 8 program, 20 minutes.

We use c2 rowers at crossfit a lot. Never for more than 2k really though. They're fun IMO.
