I went searching for a new vet who would not blame the raw diet for any problems that developed... (little did I know that they would never have any problems, lol!). The vet I finally found is a large animal vet who cares for prize dairy herds, etc... His comment, being a farm vet, was that it was a good idea to keep them away from road kill until they had figured out not to eat the fur, because that was more apt to cause them problems than the rotten meat!

He also said that there wasn't enough heartworm in our area to justify using the meds, with all their side-effects. We are in "upstate NY", in Chautauqua County. He also doesn't believe is giving any more than the basic puppy shots, and then the three year rabies. And, he is sure a lot cheaper than the regular small animal vets, who make their living selling all these shots, cleaning all the teeth, and running all kinds of expensive tests. Our vet has no stainless steel tables, and will spay or neuter your dog while you wait, then carry the dog out to the car for you as soon as he is sure the dog is coming out from under properly. He says it is less stressful for the dog to go home than to stay in the office kennel.

I love this vet, who takes a sensible approach to caring for animals. He will get down on the floor to work with a dog who is fearful of the table, too, and has come out to our car to give the rabies shot, so we don't even have to take the dogs into the office.

I'm so lucky to have a raw dog feeder CSA ( community supported agriculture ) here. Maybe there is one near you?
It saves lots of money! Although with little dogs like ours it's a lot cheaper to feed the good stuff!
It's so awesome, they won't get fat or sick.
    Woof!

The most impressive physical display so far (3 weeks) is how they have stopped shedding and there coats are shiny. Cant wait to see more results. Switching to a Hollistic Vet as well.

Just wait until you see the poop improvement! Totally raw fed dogs have firm small stools that do a great job of pushing the stinky stuff out of their anal glands, so you don't have to do it for them. No more "scoots!"

Also, the poops do not smell as badly, and are much easier to pick up, if you have to. Another benefit, if you do not pick the poops up, is that they crumble away to a whitish powder with a few days of sunshine. Very nice not to have a yard full of stinky mushy poop in the spring to clean up after a winter of snow!

    Second that....

Seriously, its nice when you can find an old country vet that still considers dogs dogs and cats cats. We have had our bird dogs sewn and fixed up in some of the smallest towns of KS, NB, OK, and SD. We would be lucky if the vets would take $150 bucks for a major emergency on a Sunday. In town back in Colorado, a simple gash on a paw is usually 400-500 minimum plus a lecture about the bacteria in raw food and the fact we don't vaccinate often enough. Sometimes I consider a few hr drive out east might not be a bad idea when we need vet care anymore...lol.
