    The Healthy POO Thread

    Primal Fuel
Don't laugh so hard. This is serious. Our POO is a direct indication of our good health and good diet.

For YEARS, even DECADES while eating the High Carb, Low Fat diet, my poo was disgusting, buttery-like, and bad enough to Gas-To-Death any poor soul who entered the bathroom. One occasion I recall a man exclaiming, "My GOD, did a rat crawl up your ass & die?" as he ran out of the bathroom. A staunch supporter for Healthy Poo is none other than Oprah Winfrey, and she has said repeatedly that we should pay close attention to our POO.

Here are some nice links I have accumulated on this subject:
    * How healthy does your poo look? Bad poo = Bad Diet = Poor Health

    * Watch for Dr. Gillians TV Show, “You Are What You Eat,” on cable-TV BBC channel
    - - We just LOVE her her TV show about diet & exercise.

Any conversation about poo has to include the Bristol Stool Scale!

Mine were historically a 2 and damned painful sometimes, like shi**ing a brick. piles came with it.

Now, not so bad, more like a 3 or sometimes a 4.

Apparently 4 is the perfect type to have

    Queen,

Congrats on your FINE Poo !

We are now 7 weeks into PB and the wife & I are finally getting the "Perfect Type 4 Poo" more than half the time, with type 3 the remaining times.

COLOR of the poo is also important. Do you know of any color charts and the definitions of poo color?
I know that black ( or red) indicates blood, but that is about all.

    Best to you,
    Grizz

    Color variations of feces
    [edit] Yellow
Yellowing of feces can be caused by an infection known as Giardiasis, which derives its name from Giardia, an anaerobic flagellated protozoan parasite that can cause severe and communicable yellow diarrhea. Another cause of yellowing is a condition known as Gilbert's Syndrome. This condition is characterized by jaundice and hyperbilirubinemia when too much bilirubin is present in the circulating blood.

    [edit] Black
Feces can be black due to the presence of red blood cells that have been in the intestines long enough to be broken down by digestive enzymes. This is known as melena, and is typically due to bleeding in the upper digestive tract, such as from a bleeding peptic ulcer. The same color change (albeit harmless) can be observed after consuming foods that contain substantial proportion of animal bloods, such as Black pudding or Tiết canh. The black color is caused by oxidation of the iron in the blood's hemoglobin. Black feces can also be caused by a number of medications, such as bismuth subsalicylate, and dietary iron supplements, or foods such as black liquorice, or blueberries.[3] Hematochezia is similarly the passage of feces that are bright red due to the presence of undigested blood, either from lower in the digestive tract, or from a more active source in the upper digestive tract. Alcoholism can also provoke abnormalities in the path of blood throughout the body, including the passing of red-black stool.

    [edit] Blue
Prussian blue, used in the treatment of radiation cesium and thallium poisoning, can turn the feces blue. Also, substantial consumption of products containing blue food dye (things such as blue koolaid or grape soda)[4]

    [edit] Silver
A tarnished-silver or aluminum paint-like stool color characteristically results when biliary obstruction of any type (white stool) combines with gastrointestinal bleeding from any source (black stool). It can also suggest a carcinoma of the ampulla of Vater, which will result in gastrointestinal bleeding and biliary obstruction, resulting in silver stool.[5]

I'm really suffering in this department this week. I was diagnosed with anemia 3 weeks ago. I've been taking Floradix, which wasn't causing too much of a problem (on top of what no grains is still wreaking, that is). This week, I switched to using a cast iron pan and cooking once or twice a day in it. Man, I can tell that's upped the iron intake!!!

I'm taking magnesium in increasing doses (sure would like to see the legendary Type 7 it's supposed to produce! Is there any downside to upping the dose until that happens?) I drink huge amounts of liquid, I'm eating plenty of fat....if this continues for more than another couple of weeks, I may have to add some psyllium.

    Yours Uncomfortably,
    Liz.

Zone diet on and off for several years....worked, but too much focus on exact meal composition
Primal since July 2010...skinniest I've ever been and the least stressed about food

Anemia sux. I was anemic & didn't know it for like a year. Then for another year, I took iron pills, ate a lot of beef (it seems like we had beef fajitas, which you eat off of an iron skillet, at least once/wk), a lot of spinach, etc. I ride my bike & exercise regularly & the OTC iron pills did seem to help, but nothing really improved it til i had a blessed hysterectomy (lap style, no big belly scar, quick healing & recovery time). That plus being grain free - i swear, i have never felt better!

oh & that post is poo related b/c my uterus had swollen so much, like to the size of a 4 mo fetus, & it was laying against my bowels, so that dept improved quite a bit post-hysterectomy as well.
