    What supplements do you take?

I've recently starting to discover primal & am planning my own 30 day challenge Friday but I wanted to get advice on supplements.

I'm currently taking fish oil, calcium-magnesium, vitamin D and a b-12 supplement. any suggestions on these and/or others I should be taking on this diet? I have been buying the whole foods brand of all of these and taking them as directed.

    Here's one good resource:

I am personally partial to probiotics and digestive enzymes.

Here are a couple of useful forum threads about probiotics:

And here is the definitive thread, to date, about enzymes:

Regarding your B-12 supplement, be sure to take a sublingual, because this is absorbed much more effectively than those that have to pass through the digestive system. The methylcobalamin form of B-12 is supposed to be the best; here's the one I use:

Taking a good-quality multivitamin would also be a good idea... you can cover a lot of nutritional bases easily that way.

I wouldn't take calcium/magnesium. Most of us are getting too much calcium in ratio to magnesium anyway and once we optimize D levels, we need *much* much less calcium....1/4-1/2 less than we would otherwise.

You may or may not need b12 now that you're eating so much meat.

    I 2nd Kate's recommendation for a multi. I like Rainbow Light Women's Just Once.

Magnesium on it's own is likely what you need rather than cal/mag.

    I take:
folic acid 400-800 mg ( as a woman of childbearing years that isn't sure if she is finished bearing children I feel it is an important one to have *just in case)
magnesium- Ionic Fizz is the brand
Vitamin D, 2000-3000 iU, taking Nutre Made right now until it is gone then will replace with something different- it is D3
Fish Oil 1-2 capsules a day, agian taking Nature Made until it is finished then replacing it

I used to take Cod Liver Oil, but when we moved we weren't able to take it with us. I need to get some more. This I took every 2-3 days.

    tmac,
How many units of vitamin D are you taking. I think fish oil already has vitamin D, so unless you take a blood measurement to verify your Vit D needs, you should be on 1,000 IU vitamin D3 per 25 lbs of body weight.

See Cillikat's Vitamin D link at the bottom of her messages.

    Best of health to all,
    Grizz

Vitamin D is found in Cod Liver Oil. "Fish Oil" does not have Vitamin D.

Smart stabby supplements supposedly support stamina!

Magnesium, Calcium if I need it, fish oil if I need it, vitamin d, zinc, k2 and iodine. That is a lot of supplements but actually fairly cheap and very useful.

edit: Stabby's smart supplements simulate sustenance!

Some are now being made with vitamin D added. I think I saw it in Nature Made. Not sure if other brands are doing the same.
