    What's going on?

    Shop Now
I began really well... lost three pounds in two weeks. Felt great... joints began aching, perhaps after eating huge amounts of tomatoes. Cut them out and joints now feel better.
But, I've put the three pounds back on and another two. I'm so peed off! It can't be muscle cos I've not been working out. I haven't been drinking enough lately so don't know if that's got anything to do with it.
I feel absolutely bloated in stomach area and it's usually flat.
Sample diet for last few days:
Wed... 1 egg, 2 rashers bacon
    mushroom and blue cheese salad
kale cooked in coconut milk, green beans, roast squash with cheese, rib eye steak
    Thur... No breakfast
strawberries and blackberries with double cream
2 chicken thighs, squash, broccoli, carrots
    Fri... 1 cupcake
    tomato, mozzarella and lettuce
    steamed salmon, lettuce cucumber
    3 spoonfuls tiramisu.

Don't know what I'm doing wrong. Also, my thyroid meds have just been increased from 75mcgs to 100 mcgs. And, (the cherry on the bloody cake) I'm menopausal.

I hope someone addresses this sentence ... It can't be muscle cos I've not been working out ... because I have a nebulous notion that if treated optimally, our bodies will build themselves optimally. That would mean a nice ratio of muscle to fat without a concerted effort to physically body-build.

I don't really have anything helpful. I fluctuate 2 or 3 lbs all the time. Despite the fact that I haven't really lost any weight for months, these freshly washed jeans are ridiculous big! Sorry, no wisdom just a little support.

I've been at this for 2 weeks and I haven't lost any weight - but I definitely feel that I have put on muscle, without doing too much of anything. I think the body will build muscle even if you aren't lifting weights. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. Sure, you won't be totally ripped from doing just day-to-day activities, but I think the body will create muscle when given the proper nourishment.

I bet that is what is happening - gaining muscle, losing fat. How do your clothes fit? Like I said, I am the same weight, but my clothes are way baggier now and I just 'feel' more muscle-y and less fatty!

Edited to say: Maybe you need to up your calories too? I'm not sure the breakdown of it all, but I know I eat a lot more than that in a day. Every person is different, of course, but it doesn't seem like much food to me.

How does your diet from losing 3 lbs in 2 weeks compare to the diet you have been eating since you put back on 5 lbs? What are the differences? Does anything stand out? How do your stress and activity levels compare too?
    Find me at aToadontheRoad.com. Cheers!

The weight you've "lost" and "gained" was probably all water. You can fluctuate several pounds over the course of the day just from water.

tooround - muscle is a pretty expensive tissue for the body to build and maintain....I don't think it's going to spontaneously build muscle if activity levels aren't present to stimulate it or otherwise need it.

To answer Heather R... my clothes feel tighter.
To answer Primal Toad... Weirdly, I've been eating less this week than last week, and drinking a lot less water.
I'm five foot six and weigh 151 pounds. I'm not fat... just large.... quite athletic looking with broad shoulders and since I hit the menopause six months ago, I'm getting love handles where there were none.... yet I don't overeat. I feel desperate to feel comfy in my own body again. Pre menopausal weight was 144 pounds.

    Fortunata,

IMO, you are not following the MDA diet plan. Please review this article by Mark:

Please note the Carb Chart where Mark recommends you take 50 to 100 carbs a day. Are you eating 3 meals a day in accordance with Marks article?

Hi Grizz. Thanks for replying. Why do you think I'm not following MDA? Am I still eating too many carbs? Or am I not eating enough food in the day?
The cupcake and tiramisu were aberrations because it was my daughter's birthday.

Where's the fat? I don't see nearly enough fat, and a lot of carbs.
Primal eating in a nutshell: If you are hungry, eat Primal food until you are satisfied (not stuffed). Then stop. Wait until you're hungry again. Repeat.
