    Question: What about CANDIDA ?

Is this a bunch of BS? Or is it for real?
I am very skeptical and I just don't believe that our immune systems would allow yeast into the blood stream. This entire subject seems to be preposterous !

Candida is nearly an epidemic in our society and is responsible for many of the chronic illness categories we see so frequently. Candida symptoms are vast and all encompassing and can even incapacitate the individual.

Most people are unaware that it even exists, because most main stream doctors are uneducated about its impact on our health. People suffering from this condition often go from doctor to doctor for years and are usually told they are a hypochondriac or that it is stress or a psychiatric problem, before ever discovering the real culprit.

Candida Albicans is a yeast that occurs naturally in the human body. Normally it lives in harmony with a variety of other microorganisms and actually performs a couple important functions. The problem occurs when something upsets the balance of bacteria in the body and this allows the yeast organism to proliferate and take over all the healthy microorganisms.

It normally resides in the intestinal tract, mouth, throat and genitals, however it can burrow holes in the intestinal tract, enter the blood stream and then make it's way into any organ of the body. To make matters worse it emits over 70 different toxins into the body. Some people may even become allergic to the yeast itself.

Once this hardy organism proliferates in the body, it wrecks havoc in many ways and is the initiator of many common maladies, conditions, syndromes and illnesses in our population.

as far as I know it is all true. Horrible huh? Most doctors are aware of the conditions....it utterly ADORES sugar...to do a candida cleanse you can have anything with a hint of sugar...basically paleo!

    Queen,

Yes, you are right. I just found this thread. We can usually depend on Wikipedia for relatively good answers.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Candida_%28genus%29

The key phrase was this,"The problem occurs when something upsets the balance of bacteria in the body and this allows the yeast organism to proliferate and take over all the healthy microorganisms."

Unfortunately they didn't specify what upset the balance of gut flora, but Wiki did:"The rise of yeast infections also parallels the rise in the use of antibiotics. Antibiotics are known to promote GI candida overgrowth, and even penetration of the GI mucosa"

Here we have just another horrible side effect of drugs. Clearly another great reason to stay slim, trim & healthy to avoid the damnable doctors & their drugs!

So as long as we avoid antibiotics & other drugs, can we assume we are at minimal risk of Candida? What else could upset our gut bacteria levels?

i wouldn't say AVOID the use of antibiotics, i'd say avoid the *overuse*, because they can and do save peoples lives.

you can promote the existence of good gut flora by either taking probiotics or eating fermented foods. see also:

    Batty,

    You are just terrific!

Those articles explain a lot. I'll wager a brewsky there are millions of people suffering gut floral problems from all the the sugars & HFCS, and other junky stuff being peddled by Big Food Con Artists !

Now it is becoming clear why a person living the "fat, dumb & happy life" chugging down soda pop, cookies, cakes, Juicy Juice, pastries etc would suffer Candida Die Off symptoms when suddenly switching to a Primal Diet. That 150 lbs of sugar a year consumed by the Obese must have built up gut busting populations of yeast happily gorging themselves on sugars?

    Am I missing anything?

IME, it has much to do with immune function. A properly functioning immune system can generally keep things in check. Given enough D, zinc and a few other things immune function works pretty well.

But few get enough D. And many gorge on sugar and carbs which suppress immune function in a variety of ways....and of course in combo with the low D and zinc status, everything comes tumbling down.

The low carb flu is probably mostly just an issue of the getting gluconeogenesis up and running.

Over and over I find it's more about what we take in than about what we avoid. If our D, zinc, magnesium and potassium tanks are full, then resorting to abx and drugs when necessary tends to not be as problematic.

And yes, even those eating optimally will get sick, ocasionally requiring drugs or other medical intervention.

    K,
Many thanks. And also BTW, your expert advice has me on a proper dosage of D where I went from NONE to your recommended dosage of 1,000 Units per 25 lbs of body-weight. I'll do a blood test for D levels next month to see how that dosage is working out.

I just found Marks articles on the Low Carb Flu:
