    I can't make this stuff up:
    [quote]

    Dr. Jason Newsom railed against burgers, french fries, fried chicken and sweet tea in his campaign to promote better eating in a part of the country known as the Redneck Riviera. He might still be leading the charge if he had only left the doughnuts alone.</blockquote>

    it is easy to laugh this story off as anyone here agree that donuts are evil, and better be damned and banned, but how would it look if some other "zealot" tried to ban even more nutritionally "evil" saturated fat by prohibiting any food containing it?...

    It would look...just like many places in the US right now (particularly school cafeterias).

    It&#39;s not clear to me that this doctor is particularly targetting sugar. Many of the foods he was attacking - including the doughnuts - were deep-fried. That seems to be what&#39;s exercising him. And he even attacked hamburgers - presumably on the grounds that they contain saturated fat.

    Moreover, the problem doesn&#39;t seem to have been that he "banned" certain foods from internal staff meetings. That caused resentment among his staff, but it didn&#39;t get him removed.

    The problem was the messages passing over his external electronic noticeboard. That was treading on the toes of local businesses.
    [quote]

    businessmen ["Dunkin&#39; Donuts" shop owners] had the backing of County Commissioner Mike Thomas, who owns a diner and a doughnut shop. Thomas called for Newsom&#39;s ouster, saying the doctor shouldn&#39;t have named businesses on the message board.
    </blockquote>

    So this was not about the banning, but about the signboard.
